Driving to work this morning I noticed that the brake pedal felt slightly spongy. Then while going to meet a forklift to have a 1400# Powermatic planer loaded in the bed, my brake light came on.

The rig is in town right now, parked with a massive Powermatic planer in the back. Dang, I hope it does not rain.

The leak appears to be coming from the brake line between the frame and the fuel tank. I was not able to get a light in to see exactly what the leak is. Does anyone have any experience with leaks at this location?

 

The brake line back there does go from a rigid line to a flex line at the axle. It that where you are leaking? It is behind the fuel tank though!

Hmmmmm 1400# planer, I could find a use for that in my shop!

 

Negative- the leak is between the tank and frame. Someone mentioned that this is a common place for a leak but didn't elaborate why. I was hoping someone might know...is it just a straight shot of SS tubing at that location?

Yeah- the planer is a cherry (and a real beast). A Powermatic 180.

 

Brake line rusted through.

 

yep the line is rusted through.....common area on these super duty's....

 

Happened towith approaching a stop sign with a ton of pellets in the bed. I was told it is really common as a lot of dirt, sand and salt get up in there over time and rust the line.

 

Stupid phone, it happened to me. LOL!

 

yep it happenned to me after a panic stop. the line busted right at the fuel tank from rusting. i replaced the entire line from the front to the rear with 3 pieces and bent them to match factory, it has been about a year and no other problems since. there are many threads about this topic.

 

Common on most pick-ups.

 

Yeah, I had a shop do it for me. It was at a clip where mud/junk/crap got impacted and held moisture...

 

Yup, that is more common than air when you live where it snows.

HUGE safety problem that I wish the government would step in and MAKE every vehicle manufacturer use stainless from the factory for brake and fuel lines.

 

It probably happened here, near the cross member and the clips that hold the brake and fuel lines.
