1990 f150 4x4 5.0. Under the oil pan I have a crossmember. I have about 3 inches of clearence between the top of the pan and the crossmember. Would it be possible to unbolt the pan and slide in the new 1 piece gasket without raising up the engine. I don't want to have to raise the engine up if I don't absolutely have to. Thanks

 

i have done this in a 4.9, it was possible to just take off the old gasket and work the new one in but it is a major PAIN IN MY ***.. i ended up unbolting the motor mounts/tranny bolts from the cross member and took the intake off just to get enough clearance to take the whole pan out.. my local shop shows this as a 6 hour job on the 4.9 4x4.. not 100% on the 5.0's but i am pretty sure its very similar.. especially if yours is 4x4..

you also don't want to take off the old gasket and have all that crud fall in your oil pan.. its better to be able to take it off and clean both the pan and where the old gasket was without the pan there.. and since its such a pain and oil pumps are cheap enough.. i would replace that too while you are at it if you go ahead and get the pan completely out..

just my 2 cents.. yes its possible at least on a 4.9 but it is a pain in the ***..

I did mine without raising the engine, although the transmission was out of the way when I did it. I used the Felpro one-piece silicone gasket. You'll have to bring the gasket up from under the pan, it will have enough stretch in it to do this.

 

My dad and I replaced the pan gasket on his '92 without lifting the engine at all. Clean the outside of the pan rail and old gasket before dropping the pan and you shouldn't have any problems with dirt in the pan. Give the inside of the pan a good wash down with the drain plug removed using brake cleaner or similar and I don't think there will be any problem. The one piece gasket is definitely the way to go. It should take no more than a couple of hours to replace the gasket.

 

About a 6 hour job on the 5.0 as well, going to have my shop replace the pan and gasket for me in a couple weeks. 4x4 or not, doesn't make a difference. Mine is a 2wd and the engine crossmember is still in the way.
