I have a '01 F250 V10 that does not engage park and low1. I cant shift it up to where park should be to turn and remove the key no problem. However... I have to start it from nuetral and use the E brake to keep it from rolling when stopped. Is there a adjustment on the shifter cable or could this be something more serious? What should I check first? Where to start?

 

Sounds like a typical "sloppy shifter" caused either by loose/Missing Torx-headed bolts or from a worn-out shifter tube.

 

Crawl under the steering column and look for two Torx head bolts. They hold the shifter tube to the column. They often get loose and cause these problems.

 

I had the same issue, after i pulled the fuse access panel, found a plastic adjuster that had broken. I solved the problem by pulling the cable to correct position and wrapped a small bit of electrical tape around the shift tube. Problem solved.

 

That year F-Series might have the Torx-headed bolts Mark K refers to on the top side of the column, kinda hidden under the instrument cluster.

I'm in process of rebuilding and installing an F-Series tilt-wheel column into my '00 E250---have a few photos of the column removed to share if that's of any use.

BTW those bolts are a T-55 I believe, bushings almost always readily available anywhere parts are sold, about $5 each from the dealer.

 

They are T-30 Torx.
