Backup sensor issues

I have a good one for you all, I hope someone can help me. 2005 Crew cab lariat. Heres the story, Start the truck and most of the time the indicator light in the switch says theyre on and operating. Once it goes into reverse they automatically turn off every time. 5% of the time while in reverse I can hit the switch and they will turn on and operate. Once I put the truck into park, or drive, I can always turn them on as well. Here is a scenario (usually its this way, these are the majoritys here) Start up, sensors on. Reverse, off. Place into drive or park and hit switch, they will turn on according to the light in the switch. Place back into reverse and they are off again and I wont be ably to turn them on. Complicated... I hope you can understand that and break it down into something that is diagnosable... Thanks in advance

Sounds like you have a bad sensor. If one goes bad, it trips the system to shut down. Here's a tip......Take a stethoscope and listen for a distinct 'click' sound from each of the sensors with the truck in reverse (Engine off-key on, parking brake on of course). No click or faint click = bad sensor. Good luck.

Something else to consider: the system disables the back up sensors when you shift into reverse if it thinks you have a trailer connected. It could be a problem in the backup sensor controller OR the trailer brake controller or wiring.

So I turned the ky on, engine off, trans in reverse, waited for all the pumps and other things to quit making noise, and sure enough, I hear clicking (faint clicking) out of three out of the four sensors. Problem solved!!!! almost... I called the local stealership to see what one would be worth... $198!!!! EACH!!!! Are you F'n kidding me???? its a little pos hunk of crap I can get for $20 from a wreckers? Ya kno its cheaper to pick up a complete bumper with sensors off a parted out truck on kijiji?!?!?! Anyway, I know the solution and now I just have to find the way I will go about doing it. Thanks for the response, as speedy as it was as well as accurate!
