Jterr- the air is directed to the defrost, dash or floor by vacuum cylinders. If things dont change, you probalby do not have good vacuum. Normally you wil end up with defrost only when you loose vacuum. Read the related posts and look for vacuum leaks under the hood on the small vacuum hoses in front of glove box and motor at the firewall.

My 97' Expedition I had did the same exact thing. It ended up being a cracked vacuum line near the battery. Them lines get brittle when they get old.
