I am a little confused. A 73 didn't have a module, it had points. If it has a module in it then it must have been modified. If so, you need to post a picture of it so that we can see what it is before we can help you. Am I wrong here?

Nope, you're correct. In '73 it was points, '74-'75 points standard, electronic optional, '76 electronic (Dura-spark I) standard, points not offered.
Corrected time line, electronic ign. not standard until '76.

Like the diagram, nice and clear. I have six or seven of them.
dipstick66: If I recall correctly, solid state ignition didn't come out till 74. Here is a diagram for that one. See what color the strain relief is on the control module.

1974/79 DuraSpark Electronic Ignition

NOTE: The module used in 1974 is 1974 only (D4AZ-12A199-C) / The module used in 1975 is 1975 only (D5AZ-12A199-C).

1976/79: There are three different modules, one was only used with specific sold new in 1977/79 CA vehicles (Edit: has a red plastic square).

Look on the module above where the wires feed out, there is a colored plastic square used to ID them.

Motorcraft modules have ID numbers cast into the housing. 1974 examples: D4AE-12A199-A1A, or A1D, or A2C, or A2D.

Most common 1976/79 (also used well into the 1990's) DuraSpark Ignition Module:

1U2Z-12A199-AA (replaced D9VZ-12A199-A, D8VZ-12A199-A & D6AZ-12A199-A) .. Ignition Module BLUE plastic square (Motorcraft DY-893) / Available from Ford.

There's also this little charmer:

D4PZ-12A112-A .. Stator aka magnetic pickup coil (Motorcraft DU-1A) / Available from Ford.

Applications: ALL 1974/79 FoMoCo vehicles with DuraSpark & V8 engines except 1979 LTD/Grand Marquis 351W with EEC.

DuraSpark intro'd in 1974, but not all vehicles had it until 1976 as it depended on the applications.

Mine is blue. Its not the original engines or trans. I bought it this way. The one thing on these pics is that I have a blue wire on my distributor not purple. Everything else is correct.

Blue module introduced in 1976, original Ford part number: D6AZ-12A199-A which was replaced in 1978 by D8VZ-12A199-A, in 1979 by D9VZ-12A199-A and fairly recently by 1U2Z-12A199-AA

While searching for a good pic, I ran across one with blue instead of purple and one with a red replacing the orange so I don't doubt you. I'd follow the pinouts on connecting plugs. May be an aftermarket distributor thing.

Thanks y'all! This helped me out so much. I think I lost some hair over trying to figure out what was wrong. Everyone here has helped in some way or an other. Again thanks a million!
