I used my 4x4 for the first time today
And after I free'd the hubs in the front, I shiffted it back into 2wd hi
Though the front bar kept spinning though?
I mean at idle, the bar dosent move but when I shift into first or second gear it starts to move
is this normal? I've never really payed attention to my 4x4 until now

 

I would climb under your truck and see if there is any free wheel capability of the front drive shaft. I bet it isn't disengaged at the transfer case or at the hubs.

 

Yeah, i tried again and moved the 4x4 shifter around a couple of times
and the hubs but the shaft spins very slowley when i go in first gear or reverse
SO this is not normal right?
iv heard on SOME trucks it is, is it on mine?

 

To get it into 4wd....
1. lock in hubs
2. shift transfer lever into required range 4 H or 4 L
3. 4 wheel the hell out it.....

Ok done pulling the chebby off the wet grass.

1. Put transfer case lever back to 2wd, I let my arm rest on the seat as a way to feel the slip from 4H to 2H since its gradual.
2. Get out and un lock both hubs
3. Drive truck backwards a few feet (some say 15)

I always slowly drive left and right a bit and ck for that feeling that a hub/hubs are not locked in anymore.

And yes the front axles and d/s can coast spin as I call it.... as long as it NOT be driven by the transfer case. Another way to make sure you are in 2wd is put xfer case in N the 1 notch back.

My transfer case doesn't have "notches" as it shifts - should it? All the other 4x4's I've owed have been Jeeps, which have really obvious transfer case engagement. I may need to twin stick in the near future to make sure I'm doing it right!

I usually just put it in neutral, then pull it back until it drives (2wd) and leave it

What transfer case do you have? The detents should be fairly obvious. Any chance the clip popped off the t-case shifter and the lever isn't moving the selector arm on the T-case?

 

It's an NP205. probably worn out as all heck inside
