Info on tailgates needed.

Hey, guys, I am trying to learn about FORD trucks. I just bought an ugly 1960 F100 with a long bed, step side. But the rear does not look like any other 1960 I have seen, so I am trying to figure out what year the bed could be from. I do not know how to post pictures, but I can describe it. The tail gate has small letters that say FORD, the tail lights are on the bottom, instead of the side. If you need anymore info, I will try to describe more, but if I could post a picture, would probably be best. Thanks, for any and all help!

I'm guessing it may be a 53 tailgate.

I believe mid to late 60's had the smaller letters and the tail lights at the bottom of the bed. By the way, since you would like to learn about ford trucks, ford called the box style that you are referring to "Flareside". The other truck maker used "stepside"!

Thanks for the info! I've learned something new. I didn't mean to offend.

Welcome!!
You would call it ugly, too! I'm trying to post some photos for you guys.
It has a cadillac engine, chevy steering column, a jeep/amc chassis, s10 seats, Dana 60 rear, and swamper tires. Ugly! I'm planning on leaving it like this for a while, too. It's a mud truck, or it's going to be.

The darksiders around here use Toyota steering box. It wouldn't even stand out on this rig. The main thing is with a truck like that to enjoy it. Certainly makes for some interesting conversation.

It is truly a mutt, but look at it positively, I saved it from being killed. They were going to crush it, so, I brought it home.

B7D-8340700-A (replaced BAAD-8340700-A) .. Flareside Tailgate-54 13/16" long.

Applications: 1953/79 F100/250 with 8' bed / 1957/66 F350 with 9' Express Bed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1953/54 F100/350 Flaresides came with round taillights, 1955/66 F100/350 Flaresides came with shield taillamps. Both types bolt to brackets that then bolt to the bed sides.

The left taillamp also has the license plate bracket bolted to its backside. 1932/54 with round lamps uses one type (marked DUO-LAMP). 1955/79 uses another (marked TL-55).

1967/79's use different taillamps as the white backup lens is incorporated within the red lens. These mount the same way, to brackets that bolt to the bed sides.

btw: 1953/79 Short Bed Flaresides use a different tailgate that is 49 13/16" long. The tailgate pictured in post 11 is correct for an 8' bed.

But, the aftermarket "U-haul trailer" taillamps are an add-on. And...FoMoCo never installed taillamps below a pickup bed!

Yeah now that Ive seen the pix of it I dont think its all that ugly. Maybe a little homely but tastefully done. I was expecting a major butcher job. I was expecting to see wheel wells cutout, some sort of stacked shackled spring lifted 5ft in the air and 10 shock absorbers at each corner. Not to bad good save. And most of the time I dont worry about what other people do with their money and their trucks its none of my business. I only worry about what Im doing to my truck with my money.

It's not that bad, the purists would cringe, but I got it cheap, and it has potential to be fun. It is real solid. Eventually, I'm going to repair some rust, paint it, and replace the rotten wood in the trunk. But first, gotta get her runnin.

Well I must say, I have been anticipating this post. Bill, you are definately the authority. I will say though, that when I said at the bottom of the bed, I was not intending to denote "Below the Bed". Thanks for clearing things up.
