Hole in transmission case?

Hole in transmission case?
After driving, i smelled something horrible burning. When I get home, I get on my creeper and roll under to look for anything suspicious, and I find this. It is not where the drain plug in the pan is, it's in front of that. I checked the temp when I was driving but it never got high. It would greatly appreciate any information, I really need my transmission to not explode on me right now, I have a lot of driving to do.
Here's a gallery where there are some pictures, Hopefully someone can tell me what is the problem. It looks like there were threads, and some are left, but it looks like most are gone.

Fluid levels are all full, no burnt smell. only ever smell burning when i am highway driving, then stop. i checked all brake lines and rotors and pads, nothing out of the ordinary. it doesn't smell like burnt fluid, more like plastic, very strong. but if i drive around town it's fine. it points to the torque converter but when i shoved my nose into that little hole, i did not smell anything.

Whatever the reason the hole is there, I can tell it's not supposed to be that way from the factory. Someone, at some point, drilled that hole there for whatever purpose, I couldn't tell you. The only thing that comes to mind, is for access to the torque converter to drain fluid. From the factory, there is no drain plug on the torque coverter, but that doesn't preclude the possibility that someone might have drilled and tapped a plug into it, for access to draining it when needed. Although, that hole does look awfully small for that purpose even.

You won't see much in that hole. I'm wondering if someone drilled it to allow oil to drain from the rear main--LOL. My tranny housing has about a 2 1/2 or 3" hole drilled out for converter bolt access. I was told there is a replacement plug available for it but I've never installed anything there for the past 120K miles and had no issues.
