My 2000 v10 w/194K has developed an intermittent shake when braking. Severity from mild to severe. Had the problem earlier, suspected the rotors - replaced front rotors and pads with EB slotted rotors and Yellow Stuff pads. It was fine for a couple of months, now its back. Replaced the slide pins last night (they were in good shape, replaced anyway). Any ideas on where to look next?

 

Mine does this too.. I haven't changed anything yet, but its very intermittent... seems like its worst when I haven't used brakes for a while, like on cruise control on the interstate and I tap the brakes when someone pulls in front of me going down a hill.

 

I'm going to guess that you have a caliper that's sticking, or your wheels are torqued too tight on a couple lug nuts, causing an imbalance.

 

caliper pins are all new- were not sticking before- well lubed and no scoring. Checked all the bolts, including lug nuts- all torqued to spec.

I am wondering about ball joints etc.

 

Ball joints could cause this... I would take another look at the rotors too.

 

As LivingLarge said, Ball joints, and/or tie rod ends.
Jack up the front-end and see if you find any play or anything loose.

 

Warped Rotors?

Edit: all of my superduty's have done this at one time or another. Under heavy braking it is much worse, but light braking it is just a vibrating annoyance.

 

I would think that warped rotors would shake all the time when braking. Since this is intermittent I suspect something else.

 

Not really, may brake fine on slow soft braking and also very hard braking.

Braking from highway speeds to let's say an off ramp you may feel vibrations more. Or downhill braking.

 

Everything is tight in the front end, however I don't like the sound of the right front wheel bearing. Has anyone ever had a bad bearing cause this type of problem- seems possible. I will tear down and report back.

 

Sometimes does it, sometimes not- regardless of braking pressure. Tends to smooth out under really hard braking though.

 

I guess that would eliminate the warped rotors as a likely cause and I would lean toward something being loose.

 

Wheel bearings can cause it also, I changed mine out at 154k.... Now back to the rotors!

 

Check your Connecting Drag Link at pitman arm. Mine is worn and causes a sort of "juggling" in the steering wheel when driving. Sometimes it's more noticeable than other times.

 

Pitman arm is a bit loose, so it needs replacement. I don't think this is my main problem but does need attrention. thanks for the tip LittleRadio.
