For awhile now, I noticed a strong smell of unburned diesel coming from the exhaust. I don't smell this inside the cab; only at idle if I step out of the cab.

The smell is such that random folk have commented about it and suggested that I had a sticking injector ... but I have no symptoms of such, fule mileage is on par w/ other 6.0's, & I have no codes. My truck is stock other than a coolant filter.

Anybody else getting a strong scent of unburned diesel at idle??

 

Theres no way to know for sure if the smell is the same as mine over the internet, but a new EGR valve fixed it for me when my exhaust smelled like what you described.

 

Fuel mileage is only part of the equation for checking for a leaking injector. Does the truck act like it's got a miss? If you've got an injector leaking a contribution/balance test with an AE will show which one it is. How about smoke out the tailpipe?

 

Engine runs pretty smooth ... only a romp & puff of smoke during a real cold morning start. No contribtion codes ... but I hadn't had a contribution test done in awhile.

 

I'd get a contribution test run if your getting a strong smell of diesel out the tailpipe. Could have a cracked injector that's leaking excessive amounts of fuel. Left alone long enough might hydrolock,

 

I had a similar issue but i was smelling it inside and especially when i got out of the cab, mine was the fuel lines on the driver side of the motor had come loose, mechanic said he just had to replace a o-ring on one of the lines and the other just needed to be tightened up.

 

You know, I'm not saying you need to tear the bead off your truck...but I wonder if you have a fuel line leaking somewhere around the tank to HFCM? Could smell like raw fuel near the tailpipe if the wind was blowing the right way.

Not specifically; but, about 10-mos after this post I identified a raw-diesel leak at my fuel pressure regulator. I replaced the housing & gasket (did the blue-spring mod) and the odor diminished mostly.

I can still smell diesel exhaust when running ... I've mostly attributed it to just being the nature of the beast.
