Hello, I am new to this forum, I just purchased my dads 1960 ford f100 its an old farm truck my family and I had and the truck I learned to drive on. I am wanting to swap out the old 223 that it has and drop in a 302. It has a 4 speed trans and not sure about the rear end. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some info or places I could look to learn how to do this I am used to just fixing the engine that is in the car and not doing a swap however I think it would be easier to find parts and go the direction I want with the 302. Also any good places to look for a good 302 would be great also. Thanks in advance for the help.

I have a '58 F 100 and I built a 351 W that I put in it. Since they are both small blocks I can tell you what I did. I positioned the motor where I wanted it and made some motor mounts out of 4" c-channel. I bolted the mount I made to the frame and then bolted the engine mount to it. It stayed there until I did this Crown Victoria front suspension swap that I am currently working on. Also I am using a FMX auto trans so I had to use a B & M shifter.

For the radiator I bought an aluminum 4 core radiator from summit racing the size that I needed with an electric fan for clearance issues. I also had to make radiator mounts. I'm sure you could buy some but I'm not made of money so I made mine. Also I had to go to a junk yard and buy a drive shaft of the correct length. Of course when I got the truck it was just a rolling body. I had to put everything in from the turn signals to the gas tank and everything in between.

The actual making of the motor mounts wasn't too bad. Once you get the motor where you want it, cut a piece to bolt to the engine mount. Then cut a piece to go from that piece to the frame. Then cut another to go from the piece bolted to the frame down to the bottom of the frame for support. If you have a grinder with a cut-off wheel and at least a stick welder, you can do it. (that is all I had at the time)

I hope this helps. Don't be afraid to mess something up because you can always: a.) fix it or
b.) buy another one.

 

For your engine look for 89-93 thunderbirds and cougars for an HO engine or better yet a 96-01 explorer for a better starting point. Cheaper and easier to find than the ones out of mustangs, usually in better shape too.

Swap in a duraspark distributor and you can either run the factory duraspark or any aftermarket box you like off it. Then add a carb and intake of your choice and your motoring!
