Hi Guys,

Quick question for you. I have a 64 ranchero with an i6 and 3 speed in it. The tranny is in mediocre shape, as is the clutch, but I'm not very familiar with the early ford manuals. What am I looking for, identification wise, to figure out what rebuild kit to buy?

The door tag lists transmission code as "1", but per the tag the engine should be a 170 and it's one of the 7 main 200's, so at least the engine is not original. Not sure about the tranny, but it's possible that's not original as well.

It's a 3 on the tree setup with no synchros in first, only second and third. Beyond that, I'm not sure how to figure out what I have.

you need to get the numbers off the trans case. there are a few 3 speed transmissions.
the 2 most popular are the 2.77 and the 3.03.
the 2.77 is a delicate trans, the 3.03 is the better of the 2

 

That's what I needed, thanks! I have a sinking feeling they probably swapped in the 200 and left the 2.77 tranny, but I'll double check when I get home. They look pretty easy to tell apart just by size.

 

The 3.03 is all synchro. The sixes usually got the 2.77 in those years.

 

Yeah, I can tell you from driving it that there's no synchro in first, so it has to be that. Looks like the paper tranny for me

I'll do the clutch and see how bad it shifts after that. I had some troubles getting into second, but reading around it sounds like there are some tricks that make things easier.

1960/64 Falcon/Ranchero: Only 3 M/T available (I-6): Ford type 2.77 Light Duty (non syncro 1st gear) / Only A/T available (I-6 & V8): Ford-O-Matic 2 speed.

If shifting into 2nd is difficult, the 2/3 brass syncro blocker rings are worn.

 

I've gotten into it deeper, and it turns out it's the later 200 from a 68/69 falcon, paired with a 2.77. I picked up a duplicate block mated to a c4 on craigslist, so I'll probably bolt that up once I get the engine running smoothly.

I'd sure like to grab that crossmember from your original trans setup! I'm tryin to put together the same config in my 60 Ranchero. Same situation. I have a later 200 cid and putting a 2.77 behind it, but that CROSSMEMBER is unique for the 1960. Cant find one to save my bass!

Applications: 1960/61 Falcon/Comet (except station wagon) 144/170 3 speed M/T & Ford-O-Matic 2 speed.

Do you belong to the Falcon Club? There was a fellow in the South Bay area that specialized in Falcon parts, sold them at swap meets and club GTG's.

I don't recall his name, but Bo might. Bo owns Mustang Service Center in North Hollywood (818-765-9266).

If i can remember correctly, its on the cross member stamped on to it you will find everything you need.

I know on a 89 F-250 its stamped on to the center of it.... not to sure where its stamped on the cross member on a ranchero.
