Oil for 2011 F250 6.7 diesel

Can I use Delo 400LE 15w-40 in my new 2011 F250 6.7 diesel? OEM is Motocraft 10w-30. The delo says it is CJ-4/SM. Which ford recommends. I used to use it in my 2000 - 7.3 and my 2005 - 6.0 and had no problems. Just wanted to make sure this new 2011 - 6.7 does not need only a specific OEM oil. Any info would be great Thanks

You don't need to use a specific brand as long as it has the proper rating, but it would be wise to use the recommended weight.

You can use it. It meets the specifications required for the 6.7 . If I remember right Ford doesn't recommend using 15/40 below 20 degrees. I have used it in my truck since the second oil change. I use it year around just like I did with my 7.3 . I like that I can buy it by the case at Costco.

You should consider using the full synthetic 5w40 Delo 400. Check your manual as this oil can be used far lower temps and still provides summer towing protection so you can run it all year round without worry. Plus it will be easier starting in the cold.

I accidentally used castrol edge 10w30 in my 6.7. Castrol edge is not rated for cj-4. Is it going to hurt my engine?

If you used oil for a gasoline engine, then you ought to change it out.

It certainly can. I would suggest getting that stuff out of there ASAP before it damages any of the expen$ive emissions components or the engine itself.

I agree. If it were my truck, I would do an oil change, run it a little, then do another. Probably overkill, but I'd pay the $50 for oil & filter just to be safe.

I agree get that stuff out ASAP including the oil filter.... Assuming the Castrol oil used is API SN it probably won't hurt the emissions equipment, but what this oil lacks is the anti wear ingredients diesel require, preventing soot from clogging the oil filter and neatralizing acids from the soot in the oil. If the Castrol oil used is API CI-4/+ then yes it will damage the emissions equipment.

Most important requirement is using a oil with an API CJ-4 rating.

Troy, part of the change from CI-4+ to CJ-4 was the reduced ash content requirement. Oil burning off can form ash that will plug the DPF, which is why CJ-4 oil is a MUST for all EPA 2007 compliant engines.

id change that stuff out faster than you can type the word(s) Mobil1. Then id go to walmart and get some Mobil1 5w40 and hope your engine doesnt hate you for the mistake. Oh and Id pray too.

Tom,
I agree with the CI-4+ vs CJ4, but Shade Tree Mech said he used Castrol Edge 10w30 which is most likely a API SN rated oil for gas engines. This type of oil (SN) has lower levels of ash than the CJ-4 hence the reason I don't believe it will harm the emissions equipment. Having said this Shade Tree Mech needs to drain his oil/replace filter with API CJ4 oil asap.

Hrmmm...didn't know that SN had lower ash than CJ-4. That's what I get for assuming I guess...

What weight oil are y'all using, 5w or 15w? I used 5w40 rotella in my 6.0. I am coming up on my first oil change soon. Thinking about sticking with that. Thoughts?
