Well the other day my trucks heater was not working and it broke the belt so i went to replace the thermostat and of course the belt, well last year i replaced the thermostat and the back bolt broke off and i riged it to work for a while and it lasted a year so i put the new therm. in and another bolt broke so its time for a new pump. My question is whats the difference in water pumps there are about 5 on the checkers website and when i put it in do i need to use rtv at all or just put it dry with the gasket.And last is how hard are they to do ive done a few before but never on a truck like ours. heres the site im looking at

Hey they are sealed with an o-ring not sure about the different pumps bud

 

Buy a new pump and not a re-manufactured one. Hardest part is getting the fan and shroud off, that sucker (fan) is heavy and a some buddy help makes it easier. Once that's done replacing the pump is quite easy. The pump uses an o-ring type of seal instead of the flat gasket (at least on my 97). I used a little rtv to hold the o-ring in place when placing the pump against the block. Once completed start it up with the fan and shroud off and check for leaks. If there are some you don't want to remove the fan again.

 

If you don't have a clutch fan tool I suggest renting one. Advance auto had one to rent when I did mine and they refund your money when you bring it back. Either that or a looong chisel on the end of an air hammer spins it off. My 96 used an I ring style gasket as well

 

well i messed with it prety much all day and i cant get the clutch fan off, i even bought a clutch fan wrench set and none of them are the right size so im not sure were to turn now. the wrench say it for 7.3s 94 and up but it wont work on mine any sugestions

 

I used an 1 3/4 wrench (I think that was the size, may be 1 7/8?) and hit it with a big !@#$^&*'n hammer a few times and shocked it loose. Heard of carefully using an air hammer, don't know there.

 

Put some cardboard behind the radiator so you dont damage it if you haven't yet.

 

Do you have a wrench that will fit the fan nut? This is from the SD section, so obviously the AC is in the wrong place, but the principle still works the same. He used a piece of plumbers tape (metal strap with holes punched in it) to secure the water pump pulley so he could crank on the nut with a wrench.

 

well that is a good idea but no i dont have a wrench to fit the fan bolt so i am trying to track one down, ill try pounding on it some more tommoro i just dont get why the kit wont work when it says 1994 and up 7.3l diesl

 

If you have any metal scrap laying around and access to a torch or any type of metal saw, you could probably make your own wrench. Being in Denver, have you asked any of the guys in the Colorado Powerstoke club if they have something you can borrow?

 

i can go to my dads maybe and make something if he does not have a wrench he is going to check in the morning and for the powerstroke club i tryed to get in a few months ago with no luck maybe i will try and contact there admin see what i can do thanks

 

I would definitely contact them. The members from there I have seen post on the forums have always been very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.

 

No need for the clutch fan wrench. Put the accessory belt back on to hold things still and use an air hammer with a blunt tip on one of the tips of the flats of the clutch nut. One or two quick blasts and it should break free. Remember (like the sticker says) that the threads are RIGHT HAND threads so , you need to turn it counter clockwise (as you look at it from the grill) to remove the clutch. Seriously, though, the air hammer works really well. I didn't believe it would work until I tried it. Try to get near the tip of the flat so you have better leverage, but it really does work.

 

All right guys so just to update i did get the fan clutch off and the new water pump in, what had happened was i went and rented the tool kit and some one replaced the wrench that i needed witht he wrong one in the kit. So i went to auto zone and got a comlete kit and it came off with a little push. I an waitiing on the bottom hose and three boltss for were the thermostat goes since some one put the wrong ones in mine and thats what caused all this but once i get that i should be on the road thanks for all the help.

 

Glad you're up and running. Make sure you get your SCA up to proper level in that fresh coolant.
