Transfer case fluid???

I forgot... Does the xfer case use ATF or an oil.
1990 f150
I've used ATF a number of times but I wanna make sure.
How many quarts does it take.
I think it needs changing because the xfer gets extremely hot on the hyway.
Or a bearing is going bad, but it's only got 60k on it and the driveshafts don't wiggle at the case. Hmmm

Per my Shopkey 1356 takes 2 qts mercon, 1345 takes 3.25 qts mercon.

For the sake of simplicity, use the same ATF you're using on you tranny (that's if you have an auto, of course). Just for some others that might have that question in their minds: no, the tranny and transfer case don't share the fluid.

Sweet. Thanks

Good idea about same fluid for both items. I should flush the ps fluid out sometime also. I hate carrying 5-6 different fluids for my diesel truck.

Shouldn't ps, tranny, and transfer case fluid all be the same?

^ I'm not sure when Ford switched to Mercon in the power steering pump, but I know they specified Type F at least as recently as 94.

It doesn't make any difference if the thing you are lubing doesn't have clutches like the trans does.

Type F hasn't been used since the late 70's/early 80's. The M5OD manual tranny, along with most manual trannies in cars these days require ATF.

fyi,
in case you want to run mercon 5 in your E40D and ps pump.

MERCON® V Automatic Transmission and Power Steering Fluid
"Do not use in transfer cases where MERCON® ATF was previously recommended"

so looks like only the old school mercon should be used there still.

i used mobil1 atf synthetic in mine(t-case) cus it says it meets all mercon specs.i hope it wasn't a bad choice lol.
http://www.mobiloil.com/usa-english/...etic_atf.aspx#

edit,
oh your talking about a 2k f350 diesel truck.im not familiar with what the 4r100 (latter built e40d renamed) and t-case call for anyway.probably only mercon v for the trans, might both be mercon v anyway.seek correct section or owners manual.

I just threw in my superduty diesel as an exampl of all different fluids and needing to carry them all (diesel oil, mercon trans fluid, royal purple ps fluid, diesel antifreeze, dot5 brake fluid, methanol, fuel additive)

I was originally talkin about my 90 F-150. I'll never put mercon v in anything I own unless it came that way from factory. The 4r100 had mercon3 or regular mercon, Not mercon5. You can use either fluid in it, because it's backwards compatible. It's just too expensive for my liking.
I'll replace my ATF fluids all with the same brand ATF. It will make for topping off and replacing it very easy.

I was talking about the power steering fluid spec, not transmission. My 87 owners manual calls for type F in the power steering pump, and I'm pretty sure the 94 I took an engine from called for the same thing.

It doesn't make any difference if the thing you are lubing doesn't have clutches like the trans does.
This makes sense too. I found another thread where someone said something similar:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ing-fluid.html

The motorcraft Mercon V page linked to by FORDF250HDXLT also says not to use in applications that specified Type F.

If I read right late model 4R70W and E40D that both used mercon can be changed to mercon V if you drain the torque converter and pan I think don't quote I read somewhere on here Ford had a service letter out that said this and it fixed some shifting issues
