460?
Welcome to FTE!
This is NOT a 73-79 specific question,it is a 460 engine question.
You may either check in the 385 engine series forum or go to my web site and get the info right away.
Do you see my sticky post near the top of this forum?
It says : Tune-up specs.

Look up your Truck model with engine >
Write down the calibration code .
I think it is 8-97-R0 for Non-California 460's
Scroll down the page until you find this number [8-97-R0].
I think it is near the bottom of the page>
Read across the tune-up specs
If I remember correctly it is about 12* BTC .
Make sure you read the other parts too.

Here's a devils advocate question for you. If you stumble across a motor that you have no idea as to what it origionally came out of (for instance a '73 4WD with a 460, and it has had a backyard rebuild done to it (a can of spray paint) How do you tell where to set the timing then?? It could be anywhere from 6* to 16*??!?!?

460?
Im alittle confussed about this 73-79 specific thing..... If i dont know what the engine came out of but it is in a 73-79, wouldnt that kind of make it a question for the 73-79 forum... ? Ive seen this a few times. Yes if the question was just about the 460 then it isnt a specific questiond but if it is about a 460 thats in the right type of vehicle would that make it a specific question for both forums? Im just wondering about this because it has happened to me also.
Just a thought..

460?
It was a long night.
I originally took it as a *460 Identification* question.
The fact that I suggested to him to look at my 77-78-79 Engine specs meant it is possible & if it is actually a 460 *there are the specs for it*.
All my little bit of info mentioned to him >>>were 460 related.

One way that I've heard of checking to see if a 460 is original is to see if it is 4-wheel drive. To my knowledge, the 4-wheel drive trucks did not come factory with a 460. I was recently looking at a 79 F150 4-by-4 with a 460 in it, just from that I knew it wasn't original, and I was right. Regardless, it sounds like a good buy, but check it over real close to see who installed the engine, and look for reciepts so you know what went into it - to see if its a new engine or a jury-rigged rebuild.
