Bent over by Ford again!

Well, took my ESP covered 92K mile 2008 Expy back to the dealer for the third time for the downshift squawk my tranny makes when going about 30-40 and accelerate moderately. They fixed the trans both times(at 32K and 59K) by following the TSB which involves replacing the friction plates. This is a temporary-30K mile-fix as the problem returns. This time Ford said they are not authorizing any more friction plate replacements as it does not fix the issue and 'doesn't affect the performance of the transmission'. Which they are right in one respect, the friction plates wear out in 30K miles, but having to hear that squawk reduces the resale value of my car. Not good. Not tranny should make a noise like the main belt is slipping. Stupid. Ford is burning customers left and right. Ahhh!

WTF !!!

Crap.
My 08 does this on occasion, I try not to do it because I thought it wasnt good for the tranny. I was holding off on having this done until right before my ESP warranty runs out. I was figuring that if it lasts about 30K that would buy me a few years.

I thought I read something about Ford came out with updated frition plates in the newer Expy's 2010-2011. Why cant they use those?

Are the Navigators suffering from this too? I know they use a slightly different trans.

The friction plates are the problem. Do you have any info on the new friction plates?

On the good side, the tranny tech who really pushed to get them fixed said they will not harm the transmission at all. I hope he is right.

Might still be worth trying at your dealer, but this came down from Ford Corporate. It's not cheap to fix, I think at least 8 hours plus parts, which are the plates and the fluid.

Sorry I don't have anything in writing about different frition plates but based on the way the TSB is written it would seem they may have updated the friction plates.
The TSB 09-6-1 only lists 07-08 Expeditions.
The part number for the "Plate Internal Spline-Overdrive Friction Plate" is 6L2Z-7B164-CA.
For labor it lists the 4x2 as 10.9 hours and the 4x4 as 11.6 hours (mine is a 4x4 of course)
The TSB goes on to say
" Some 2007-2008 Expeditions vehicles equipped with a 6R75 transmission may exhibit a squawk type noise during hard acceleration down shifts (4-3) (5-3) and (6-3) downshifts. The noise is produced during the release of the overdrive clutch.

Berry1234, I found something interesting.

The part number for the 07-08 Friction plates was 6L2Z-7B164-CA ( now changed to 6L2Z-7B164-D ) and list for about $18 each x 6.

But the part number for the 09-up friction plates is 9L3Z-7B164-C and list for about $7 each x 6, so there is a difference, what, I dont know. Wonder if you could get the dealer to install the new ones instead.

Have you heard of anyone with an 09 and up Expy have the downshift problem?

I have not heard of any 09 and up but I don't think many people hear this or know what it is. Not sure on the part numbers.

I wish there was a way to tell what the difference was in part numbers.

Just make the exhaust louder than the noises by putting a flowmaster super 44 on there! Cheaper than a trans fix.

Sorry to hear about your treatment by Ford. I can not say much at this point , but I know how it feels with what I am going through with my 2010 expedition.
