1991 F150 Key Problems
I recently got a 1991 Ford F150 4x2. I got it for $200 expecting some problems. Just not one this big.
Problem:
The truck starts just fine, idles fine, everything works flawlessly. When I go to shift into drive the engine kills but leaves every accesory on.
Anyone have any clue what is causing it to kill? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Alex

The truck has the Inline 6 with a Auto transmission. Yes it kills when trying to shift into anything. The key is super sensitive. If you just tapped the key the engine will shut off. It will also shut of if you grab the steering wheel when getting out or in the truck.
We brought it to the one of the local shops for the brake lines and they said that the ignition cylinder lock or switch is worn.

it the key is loose in the ignition lock cylinder then it is probably a bad connection in the cylinder that is getting jostled around when you shift. There is a link about changing the lock cylinder somewhere on the site if you search under ignition lock cylinder replacement or some variation, they new cylinders are around $20 so it is not a huge deal. If the problem persists then you will have to start tracing connections, not a huge deal but time consuming, Good luck! Just a thought, is it the original key from 91 and is it really badly worn? I just replaced my original key, it was so worn that I was worried about it snapping or bending, the new key seems to fit everything better with less wobble in locks and ignition.
