2 nights ago changed the fuel filters for the 3rd time on truck since bought it a year ago. It has 67,000 miles. The truck ran for about 2 minutes and then wouldn't start. For the last two nights have done everything including cycling the key over and over to purge air, replacing the fuel filters thinking the first ones may have been defective, pumped the gas pedal while trying to start it, tried to start it with fuel cut off switch held in, changed o rings etc. The first night I didn't get fuel at the head but after changing the filters a second time, I now have fuel at the head. That is the only progress I have made. The truck has gas and it is fine as we are using it in other trucks. The battery has never been allowed to totally deplete.

Any further suggestions.

 

This happened to me too. This is why I let ford do it now. Not worth the hassle. It had nothing to do with procedure. Sometimes you just get rouge filters. My only suggestions are change them again or take it to Ford.

 

Its probably not your issue, but make sure the cap is all the way seated on the frame filter. I have seen several folks stop tightening it and the o-ring not be seated. If that is the case, then it will suck air. IF you changed the top filter and then changed the bottom, take the top back off, cycle the key quickly, and put it back in. One of the guys changed the top one, took the bottom one off and started talking on the phone. When he tried to crank, it would not start. Messed with it for an hour and finally took the top filter back out, It burped and we cycled the key to purge the air out of the line and it cranked after that. It should not have done it but it did.

 

Sounds like you didn't properly prime the system before starting it the first time after changing the filters. Now you have air in the fuel rails in the heads. Priming it now won't help, because the air bubbles are already past the fuel return line. This is why it ran for a couple of minutes, and then died out. If I am right, your solution is to crank crank crank and crank some more. You might even need some battery charger help. Be sure to crank for 1 minute, then rest the starter for 1 minute so that it doesn't overheat. When it does start, it will probably be rough for a while while all the air gets purged out through the injectors.

 

Had an experienced mechanic look at it. Wasn't anything to do with fuel filter change but an EGR valve that went bad. Apparently per mechanic and then the dealer, this is a very common problem. Now trying to get repair/replacement covered under warrenty by the dealer!

 

I have same problem at 1st, not the problem with ERG. After I purged the air from my fuel lines I got truck to run, but it died after driving it for 5 minutes. Purged lines again and was again able to start it. after letting it idle in driveway for 10 minutes, I stopped it and then let it rest for 5 minutes. when i tried to start it, it would not start again. If I have a leak, would it idle perfectly for 10 minutes and then not restart? Or is it just air still trapped in system. I had changed my fuel filters, WIF Sensor and HFCM Gasket (after cleaning it out)

That doesn't make any sense... It ran before the filter change just fine. Why did changing the fuel filter make the EGR go bad?

Rechecked the filter on the body, I may have not tightened it enough when I 1st changed it (not wanting to over tighten). It now starts and runs fine. thanks for the information found here. I will continue to use this forum.

 

Sounds fishy to me too, get a second opinion.

 

I just had this issue with a friends f350, changed the fuel filters, bled the fuel system, purged the air, changed the starter, basicly everything ford recemended. Tried for hours to get it running. Finally I figured out that the RODA DEACO was tripped even though the switch was in the off position. Check the position the mechanism on the intercooler pipe, make sure its in the proper position, it should click when you push lever down to reset the valve. If its a commercial vehicle check it!!!. Sometimes education is expensive
