Question truck bogs down when coming to a stop light then corrects itself

my truck has done this since I bought it, I would like to address it now, sometimes when switching from reverse to drive or park to drive etc. the truck will bog and you can see the rpms drop about 200rpm and catch itself and go back up, it will also do this when coming to a stoplight

what could this be?

maybe something with egr valve?
ICP?
IPR?

When the ICP starts acting up, it will usually surge with no input to the throttle. Not sure what exactly you are experiencing, have you checked the ICP or pigtail for oil? Early 03 is under the turbo, later is on the right side valve cover.

yep I know the icp is on the turbo on this model which is why I havent checked it yet haha, but the truck is not surging at idle, it will just drop once and come back up

there has to be a load on the engine ex. when in drive/ reverse or stopping at a light in D, idle is fine

*EDIT* just reread your guys posts and reread mine, well I'm not having the idle drop when on the throttle so it could be the icp then?

what exactly am I looking for when I check out the icp sensor? just oil in the wires? im guessing that means the sensor failed internally and is letting oil pass

If you can reach and unplug the ICP, that will set a default. Drive the truck and if that corrects the problem, you found your answer. The ICP is under the turbo, and fun to get to also.

Yepp, you will have lots of fun replacing the ICP under the turbo.

IT might just be worth it to change it and the pigtail for a piece of mind. I paid 40$ for my ICP on ebay.

+1 for changing the pigtail while you're back in there. Make sure the wire is clean and bright, and crimp those connections good if you are going to use crimps. I soldered mine and used some silicone and heat shrink tubing to weatherproof them.

I have an 06, and don't know much about the 03's but im almost positive you do not need to pull the intake, some guys dont even pull the turbo.

They get to it from underneath the truck.

Ford Powerstroke Diesel 6.0 liter ICP Sensor 2003 | eBay

not 40$ but still cheaper then the dealer

My ICP is under the turbo. My removal was approached from under the truck. The front drive shaft was removed for better access to the heat shield blocking the ICP. There is a 13mm bolt behind the turbo inlet Y pipe (not visible) and two 10mm bolts to the right of that (both visible). Once the shield was out of the way, it was pretty easy with a 27mm socket. I was lucky and did not have to shorten my socket. I read that others have used a shortened wrench to remove the ICP.

If you pull the turbo, both the ICP and IPR are easily accessible.

hey guys the weekend is here and I'm getting around to this issue finally

I have another issue that I think is ICP related

my truck will start better after cold soak overnight than when its warm

using 15-40 rotella and this morning was about 29 degrees F, glowed the plugs twice and literally the truck started within a split second.

when the truck is at running temperature and I shut it down and come back in lets say 10 minutes the truck will crank for like 6 seconds before it will fire? not sure what the issue is here

I doubt its HPOP related since it starts awesome in the morning, plus I heard the 03 hpop system is not as prone to failure as later model engines

let me know what you think, I'm running to the dealer in the am for some hub studs, would like to grab whatever else I need while there

I've done a TON of reading tonight, I'm a little confused thought between the 03-early 04 model engine and late model engine HPOP systems

so apparently my 03 doesnt have the high failure stc fitting, does the 03 have dummy plugs and stand pipes?

im kind of thinking the long crank when hot is HPOP related, oils thick when cold thats probably why it starts so much easier

im kind of bummed, thinking this might be leading to a hpop failure or no start condition would like to figure it out, please comment, thanks

im going to unplug the icp sensor and drive around a bit then try to hot start it and see what happens, doubt it has anything to do with it though

03's don't have STC or dummy plugs. It's a different HPO system than the 04 and 05-07 models, which use them. The 03 and 04 motors use the same HPOP, but different oil rails and can also develop leaks at the branch tube here: Page 40: Fuel Management System. There is an o-ring kit for it: HPOP seal kit 03/04 3C3Z-9G804-AA

Hi dont mean to hi jack but do you noticr that your truck does this most of the time if you start your truck and drop it in reverse really quick like when you are in a hurry before the engine has made to many rotations? I am have the same exact problem you are with my late 04 and that is when I see this problem the most. Drop it in gear quickly an ROMP ROMP ROMP ROMP like it has a big cam or then clears right up. never does when does it while driving or idling.

yes my truck does the same thing,

npc partsman thanks for the link to the seals, if I do have to pull the hpop cover I think I'll do the oil cooler at the same time
