Other than the transfer case plate, were there any other skid plates offered on the F-Series of this vintage? I'm going to the wrecking yard in search of the TC plate, and I want to get any others as well. My truck is a '90 F-150 SC/SB 4X4 with single tank, BTW.
I just went and looked under my truck, and I can't see how a rear tank skid would do anything as the tank is mounted way up under the bed and fully covered by the spare tire assembly.
What is to understand? It covers the bottom of the fuel tank(just like the front one). That way if you drive over something or back over something, it will hit the skid plate and NOT the tank
FYI.. the transfer case skidplate hangs WAY low on these trucks, I took mine off since I never go offroad and because I thought the truck looked stupid with this big chunk of steel hanging down underneath. The fuel tank skid plate fits much tighter but it also collects a lot of dirt, I bet I dumped a couple pounds of sand out of it when I dropped it.
The spare tire carrier sucks (cut mine off years ago after the first time I had the pleasure of breaking it to remove my spare), so my spare stays in the bed, locked down to a chain welded to a bed bolt. I would have a hard time hitting my rear tank on anything with how low the receiver hitch sits, but the plate there wouldn't hurt to have. As far as the TC skid plate sitting so low and looking stupid, it has to sit low because the TC sits low. And a TC looks pretty stupid when its split open But as Conanski said, if you're not wheeling it doesn't have much use and does look a little funny.
