I had been eye balling the drops of oil out of my rear diff and that is probably the next project.

My 1960 F100 rear diff. I am pretty sure it is a 9". How many quarts should it take? (seeing as I do not have a shop manual)

I got the bolt loose and dropped a quart in and I am astonished that it is still not full! (though I could be the first person to open it in 20 years)

I going to town to get more and maybe something to suck it all out for a complete change.

Anyone use that Lucas Oil Gear stuff?

 

Baumst, I never used the Lucas product.I'd be inclined to just stay with standard 80/90 wt gear oil,unless I was starting from scratch with a rebuild.At any rate,it won't heal any noises/problems.

Also,can't say how much the diff will take.I buy a gallon with a pump,and pump slowly till it comes out the fill plug,seal it back up and good to go.It's usually cheaper for a gallon,and I can also use it in the tranny.

 

Yeah... that's what I am thinking... pumping it in. The quart I put in was shocking. There is no issue, no noise... no anything. I am just thinking...."Drops on drive way, change gasket project. Better check oil level." Cool stuff...

I would sooner think it is the pinion seal unless you can see it is dry.

By the way, I believe it should hold somewhere between 2 and 2 1/2 quarts.

 

Ended up down 1.5 qts. Nice. Except for ripping the head off the engine... I think I have been everywhere to make this reliable.
