Tachometer on V-10 engine

Need information on where to hook up a Tachometer on a V-10 engine. I have a E450 cutaway and am adding the Tach.

Is there a specific contact on the data terminal for the tach

GO to Ford racing or Saleen or any of the mustang suppliers an get a tach adapter-about 50 bucks.Where it hooks up i dont know but should be in the instuctions.Enable you to hook up any kind of tach to a distributerless ignition.

Cool Tachometer on V-10 engine

I installed an Autometer Tachometer on my Dad's E450 class C motorhome with Ford V10. The gage was previously on a Chevy V8 motorhome. I had to send it back to Autometer to be calibrated for 5 pulses per revolution. Cost was ~$30.

The instructions were on Autometers web site but does not explain everything. You must tap into pin42 of the computer connector which is in the engine compartment on the drivers side. This is a 104 pin plug. Pull battery cable neg side before disconnecting this plug. you must pull this connector because the pin wiring is labled on the back side of the connector. You will want to tap into the wire connected to pin 42 (red and white) for the signal wire.

If you do a search on this forum for Tachometer or Aftermarket gages you will find my detailed description.

Ford must be saving money not installing tachs on van chassis.
Worked great after about a 4 hour install!

Tachometer on V-10 engine

Thank you for the information. I will get into the hookup this weekend. I purchased a Tach that had a dip switch in the back to set for 10 cyl. But the instructions were very vague for the tach lead.

Tachometer on V-10 engine

Sorry about the delay in answering you, I have been traveling and not able to see my email.
The tach is a SUNPRO CP2010 or CP 2012
Actron Manufacturing Co
15825 Industrial Parkway
Cleveland, OH 44135 There was no phone or web on thier literature. These tachs are avail through most speed shops and some auto parts stores.

Tachometer on V-10 engine

I have been going thought the same thing on my v-10 van.
talking to the guys at Autometer, that pin 42 or what ever i is, is correct. the white with pinkish red stripe. but they also told me to look on the firewall. (actually right at the edge of the hood) and look for the same color wire that is labeled CTO or clean tach output. This is what i will be using. just a dangling wire with a shrink wrap cover on the end.
hope that makes it easier then looking for pin 42. (although i didnt even look for that pin.)

That is really good news as I found the CTO wire and hoped that that was the one. I will hook up there.

Tachometer on V-10 engine

I puzzled over the V-10 tach problem for nearly a year, even went to a Ford dealer and talked to several technicians. They couldn't tell me anything. Then found the little white and pink CTO wire peeking out under the edge of the hood over the firewall. Pulled on it and found a stub wire with a the label on it with the legend "CTO" popped out. Connected it and the tach worked fine.
