high idle at startup?

Do all of the modulars do this? When i crank up my e350 5.4, it revs to the moon for a second before it settles down. I have the tapping/knocking issue as well, which i haven't figured out yet, but if it's a bearing or something going, i'm always waiting on it to blow up when i crank it up and it revs high before the oil is circulated. I'm running mobil1 5w-20 but still.........

Depends on what you mean by "to the moon" They rev to maybe 1400 for about a second when they are started then depending on temp go down to 850 when warm.

Thx, I have no tach but it's on the list, it just seems to rev way more than necessary.

Most all EFI engines do this. Make sure you have a Motorcraft oil filter or you will starve the engine of oil on start-up.

Thx Lxman, I've had about 100 vehicles over the years, 3 or 4 Ford vans, and many efi, but none rev like this 5.4 at startup. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't alone.

Thx

Scotty if it helps my '00 E250 with the 5.4 does this same sort of thing, revs up just a moment or two before settling into its idle speed. Also don't have a tach but its not all that high, maybe the same RPM's as driving 10-15 mph down the street.

My first Ford modular motor was a new-to-me '97 E250 and the unique behavior was also new to me. I still thought there was a temp actuated choke, that during the colder months the RPM's should be higher on start up in order to warm the engine more quickly.

Not saying your experience doesn't count for a lot but the learning curve for me on the EFI motors with sophisticated computer controls and sensors is still quite high. Good to share knowledge here though----I've learned a lot so far!

Thx JWA, I really just want a tach I think. I hate not knowing things like actual rpms. Why would anyone build a car without one!

Scotty I'm with ya on the desire for a tach-----"just because........" if nothing else! I've been reading the thread about adding a F-Series cluster with a tach in our E vans and it seems somewhat easily done. Having already dismantled and successfully repaired a cluster its not such a mystery now. Adapting it to the existing wiring connections should be somewhat easy too----helps to have the Ford EVTM's handy.

Besides a factory tach in the cluster is so neat appearing and very unique too.
