Hey guys I am interested in getting a Ford that has a diesel engine with NO electronics in it. Something that is mechanically injected and diesel. I am looking for something that is the equivalent of the Cummins 12V 5.9L . What year should I go for. I am not a truck guy so I may have issues with this hah. Thanks for any and all help!

So up to 1994 1/2 has no electronics in it. Is that a manual or automatic? Im guessing manual.

After those years what became electronic? I am considering getting a later year and retrofitting it to make it all mechanical in every way. Thanks for your help so much!

 

Why would you want to convert a later year? What is about electronic control that you want to eliminate? The efficiency (aka fuel economy)? Power? Reliability?

Keep in mind that after about 1910 or so most diesels uses electronic glow plugs, starter motors, sensors (for gauges), etc.

As far as transmissions, they would have come with 4 speed manuals or non-electronic automatics. Both would be inferior in many ways to modern 5 or 6 speeds or the stronger automatics.

 

well I am trying to have a vehicle that is EMP proof. An EMP is something that knocks out all electronics and micro chip boards. I know that alot of people would say I am paranoid. But I was in the market for a truck and I want to be prepared just in case. If you dont agree that an EMP is a possibility you are entitled to you opinion. I just need some information from the guys who know trucks the best. I really love the Ford body style and was wanting to get one. I know that the micro chips and all that are much better for the vehicles because they make them more effecient and reliable. If I can find a later model that I can buy extra chips for to replace the ones that get fried in an event of an EMP i would do that if its a reasonable price.

I originally wanted to get a Dodge Ram 2500 1989-1998.5 because it is a simple motor with the only electronics being in the starter and the fuel shut off solenoid. I can push start it and manual turn on and off the fuel. But I would really like to have a ford. Thanks for any help.

Are you referring to the solar flares in 2012, forwarded email? Just a thought, where is the fuel going to come from for your vehicle if an EMP hits, everything is electronic now adays are you stockpiling fuel. I'm not picking on you just curious.

What are you trying to prepare for nuclear pulse EMP or Coronal mass EMP?

It actually can make a difference.

 

Even if you get one with no electronic controls or sensors, your starter motor, alternator, gauges and glow plug system will still be toast if you're hit with an EMP. Better store spare parts in a shielded container.

 

Here you go, 100% EMP proof and good mileage to boot!

 

rofl, always laugh when this comes up every year or two. Add the the ECU to the list above, you aren't going anywhere without that. Better go back to the '30s and '40's to get close to what you really want. I'd suggest removing the tin foil and worrying about something else for a while.

 

They were available with manuals and two different automatics. One was an electronic four speed automatic overdrive (E4OD.) The other automatic was a three speed non-electronic transmission (C6.)

@redford. I can push start it cant I? There for no need for the battery. I dont care too much about gauges and all that i just need point A to point B once or twice. And I live in the South so I dont really need to warm it up to much with glow plugs. At least I think thats what the glow plugs are for.

 

I would go back to nothing earlier then, say, 1989. Even then you need to watch for electronic ignition modules.

Me, I would stick modern, buy spares and store them in a Faraday cage

I wouldnt worry about. If you are cruising teowawki in a diesel pickup when most everything else is disabled someone will just take it from you anyway
