New Member. Not a collector or enthusiast, just a Ford truck user. 6 of our twelve airport vehicles (counting everything which has an engine that drives wheels) are Fords (F-700, F -???. F-350, Ranger, Taurus, Broce Street Sweeper) For aircraft fueling trucks we have a late 90s F-700, a 78 F-350 and a 69 something or other. It is larger that the 350 and smaller that the 700, has Ford 100 (not F-100 but Ford 100) badges with integrated yellow reflectors on both sides of the hood, has cargo tanks with a 9000 lb capacity (4 1/2 tons) for aviation gasoline, has a V8 engine with 2 PTOs. We have no documents on it other than a bill of sale form the seller who also didn't know what model it is. I can't locate a VIN or serial number. It would help when I go to NAPA for parts to be able to tell them what I want to buy parts for. I'd post some photos but my privileges don't include posting attachments. Could this perhaps be a Canadian built truck that might have a different model designation system than US built? or maybe someone just thought it would be funny to put 100 labels on it.

 

The VIN should be stamped on the top of the passenger side frame rail about where the axle crosses under. Sounds like the truck may have in a crash and the drivers side door with the tag has been replaced.

I called the attendant on duty and had him look for it. Stamped on the outside of the frame in the right front wheel well, he found:

70 1002 38 D1TA MB

Don't know if number dummy can do anything with that number but it is not the VIN. The VIN is on top of rail and should start with something like F50 or F70.

Lots of degreasing, wire brushing, and scrapeing has revealed no stamped numbers on top of the passenger side frame rail at the front axle location. The previously listed number is stamped in about 1/2 inch high figures which are upside down with the numbers on one row and the letters on another. Still haven't gotten around to creating a picture depository.

 

That sounds more like the frame design/part number, but that is usually on the left side.
I have usually found the vin on the top of the right frame rail about 1-2" in front of the axle center line.

This is the Ford ID engineering number prefix & suffix for the complete frame including crossmembers. It is not the Ford part number prefix & suffix. D1TE is 1971 related and frame ID numbers will only be found on the right side.

Adding the frame basic ID number to the prefix/suffix (D1TA-5005-MB), I searched the 1961/72 Master Cross Reference & 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalogs, could not cross reference it to a Ford part number.

Measure the section modulus (depth of the frame rails), I can figure out what it is from that.

The chrome hood side emblems used on 1968/72 F Series trucks have a yellow reflector with FORD 100 (or whatever thru 8000) marked on them.

Since the hood is the same 1967/72 F100/750, you cannot go by FORD 100 to ID the truck, because the original hood may have been replaced by a used hood due to damage.

Trucks assembled in Canada thru 1965 have a unique 15 digit VIN. 1966/68 Canadian truck VIN's are the same as US trucks (11 digits). Because of tariffs, these trucks were only sold new in Canada.

After the tariffs were abolished in 1968, most trucks assembled in Canada were (and are still) sold in the US of A, so there's no difference between them.

V8 engine: How many valve cover bolt holes does it have per side? Is the trans a 4 speed...and if so...where is reverse? Up towards the dash (Warner T-18), or down towards the seat (New Process 435)?

How many lug nuts do the wheels have? What is the diameter of the bolt circle pattern?

 

The rocker arm covers have 5 fasteners. 1 on the top edge, 1 in front, 1 in the rear, and two on the bottom.

The transmission is a 4 speed, although it rarely ever gets beyond second gear on the aircraft parking ramp. Reverse is toward the dash board (Warner T-18).

The frame channel is 3 inches deep and a nominal 9 inches high. The height varies some along the length.

The wheel lug pattern is ~ eight and 3/4 inches diameter and there are 6 studs.

This truck could easily be a 71. We only have it as a 69 as the opinion of the previous but not the original owner. The cargo package (aircraft fuel rig and tanks) is clearly identified as built in 1971 in West Memphis. I always thought that 2 years was a little long for a truck to sit around with nothing mounted on it.

The V8 engine is an FT engine, but...there are FOUR different ones.

Most common is the 330 2V Medium Duty, followed by the 330 2V Heavy Duty, 361 2V, 391 4V.

6 lug wheels on a 8.75" bolt circle: F500/750. Minimum F500/600 frame section modulus: 9.45."

With a frame ID number prefix of D1TA, it is...at least a 1971, possibly a 1972 / 1970 would be D0TA, 1973 = D3TA.

 

I appreciate the information. I'm having trouble finding time to post pictures. They will probably help nail it down better.
