My F150 shifts hard from first to second, the vss in the rear differential was broke off, so i recently replaced it thinking that it would fix the problem. It did not. I have the battery unhooked to reset the computer and see if it does anything. Any input would be much appreciated!

 

Any codes other then the Vss issue ?

 

i have not done any code tests yet, hopefully will tomorrow. I just hope its something electrical not actually the transmission. What do i need in order to run codes?

 

Just ground the test port and count the blinks on the CEL

 

The only code showing up is code 33.

 

Could be a bad connection or your shift position sensor on the trans is my guess. Had a 94 that would hammer in to each gear addressed those issues and it worked fine.

how do i know if i have a bad connection? it shifts hard enough to knock your head back if you have it 3/4 throttle or to the floor. Sometimes it also seems like it just skips first and starts from 2nd to 3rd.

 

Just have to trace the wires and check the connectiins along the way from the mlps to the ecu. My truck had two wires that had corroded and broke off on the firewall.

i do think it needs to be adjusted because on the dash it doesnt always line up when it says its in gear, like reverse would be half way in to the R not all the way, do you know of any way to tighten it up? its too dark now, but i gotta replace the rear brake line tomorrow morning, so i can check that too.

 

That indicator needle is spring loaded and pulled by a string. The shift position sensor that you should be looking for is on the transmission itself. Follow where the shift cable routes to the transmission, that is the sensor that tbirdscott is pointing you to.

I've pulled my electrical connector off and sprayed it with contact cleaner, then reassembled it with dielectric grease, but it didn't help. I'll change mine soon and hope it helps my problems.

I'll look into that. Do you think that the rear antilock and brake light on the dash could cause the computer to think something is wrong making it shift hard? dad and i just replaced the line today so now the rear brakes work. but the two brake warnings are still on. the rear anti lock goes off for about 3 seconds and goes right back on, and i think the check engine light blinks 3 times now, and shuts off

 

forget all that, turns out dad left the CEL test grounded to the truck, after the computer realized that the brakes were fixed the rear antilock and brake light on the dash turned off. still shifts hard though. any ideas?

 

my 1991 f150 E4OD did the same thingchanged my TPS sensor and cleaned my rear differential sensor, fixed the problem

 

my 94 did this it slammed second, my mech who I trust greatly told me its adjustment and that he could fix it but it wouldnt hurt anything leaving it alone

 

its my first truck, i paid 800 bucks for it so i didnt ask for perfection, i wanted something to work on, which i got, but the guy i bought it from, never mentioned anything about the transmission shifting hard. I'm going to drop the pan, and change the accumulator spring because its a constant hard shift, the harder you are on the throttle the harder the slam. I hope it cures the problem. Any more ideas would be appreciated. If it helps any my truck is a 91.
