2000 Expedition AC Compressor/Clutch Noise

My 2000 Expedition AC is making a constant noise that sounds like worn bearings. The noise occurs whether the AC is on (clutch engaged) or not. Would this point to a problem with the clutch assembly or is it the compressor going out?

Have you checked your Idler & Tensioner Pulley, the bearings could be making the noise.

2000 Expedition AC Compressor/Clutch Noise

I removed the belt and checked both the idler & tension pulley. Both are good. I hand turned the wheel on the clutch assembly and can definitely hear the noise. So does this mean it's just the clutch assembly or could it be the entire compressor?

It is most likely only the clutch.

Fortunately I think you can get off cheap with just a clutch kit instead of a whole compressor and R134-a change. Here's a kit that's fairly inexpensive: Expedition/Navigator A/C Compressor Clutch Kit CL 0542C | eBay

It's the hub more than likely on your a/c compressor.. I would recommend replacing the clutch/pulley ***'y while you can.

I had the noise, for a month, and it finally locked up on me. Costed me more than it would have if I replaced the clutch/pulley ***'y in the beginning.. Check out my thread.
