what kind of tranny does my expy have?

So our 1998 4x4 5.4L expedition is in need of a new transmission, and we've found a few picked from other vehicles, and we need to know which ones will work. From what we can find on the internet, it's either a 4R100 or a E4OD. We tried looking at the marking on the transmission itself, and the lettering is worn off and illegible. Is there any other way to figure this out? A code written elsewhere on the car or even some defining features of either transmission that we can simply look at and decide which we have?

Also, we've been told that if you have an E4OD you need an E4OD to replace it but if you have a 4R100 you can replace it with either a 4R100 or an E4OD (or something like that) can anybody confirm this?

Go to this website and type in the VIN number.
The 3rd item down the resulting list should be the transmission type.

The Decoder shows my XP has the '4 SPD AUTO TR-NAAO E4OD(4R100)' transmission.
Those are the same two trans numbers in your post.

thanks. but I'm a bit confused on what E4OD(4R100) means. Does this mean it has an E4OD, or a 4R100? or is 4R100 a type of E4OD?

4r100 has 20 bolt on the oil pan and its noticably 2x the size of the e40D

Not knowing anything , I did some research and it seems the the E4OD was updated in 1998.
Ford renamed it the 4R100 in keeping with new naming standards.
It was largely the same as the E40D, but with some reinforcements to address reliability.
It was used in the XP from 1999 to 2003 with the 5.4 engine.
