**** idiocy

I'm wrapping up on my 1963 1/2 V8 Ranchero project and finally got to some missing *****.
Specifically the choke, temperature and vent *****. My Ranchero came with the white with chrome inset *****. I have black *****, custom (weird shaped) and solid chrome ***** on hand, but I want all the ***** to match.
So I ordered some from one of the major Falcon/Ranchero supply houses.

Odd thing, when I got this Ranchero, it came with extra new *****, but they didn't fit anything on the truck. Small (10-24) brass inserts that don't screw on to any part of the dash equipment.

Anyway, I ordered the three ***** from their catalog, checking them on line, etc.

The ***** arrived, and of course, they are the same 10-24 threaded, don't fit anything ***** the previous owner bought and left in the parts he couldn't use box.



Enclosed is a piece of paper telling you to 'take the controls to a local machine shop and have them turned down to take a thread fit'.

That is beyond stupid.
No machine shop in my area would do it, of course. I asked a few and got laughed at. I had spare controls along to show what was needed.
Finally one guy who said, "well, maybe, but it will cost 100 buck each", and he didn't want to do it.
Don't blame him, you can't exactly turn them on a lathe with all the cables, etc.
Besides, it would look, well stupid. The threaded holes are not deep enough to actually go far enough down the shaft. You would have to cut off the end, reduce the end diameter (about 50%), then thread the end. As each shop said, chances are, it wouldn't work, the cable would be damaged, and besides, it would 'look funny'.

Part that makes me angry, no mention that these parts won't fit, or work as sold, either on line or in the catalog.

These parts would be easy to fabricate, if you were casting the '10-24' parts already.
But they obviously don't give a D_n about their customers.

Even a polite 'Must be machined to fit' on their site would help.

I needed the ***** so I drilled the centers out, and epoxyied the ***** in place, but I would have much rather had the right part.

Anyone know of an honest vendor who actually sells the dash *****?

The simple answer is: The ***** for the choke cable, temp cable and vents were only furnished with the cables. Ford did not sell them separately. So, there is no way to remove them without ruining them.

What you prolly bought...(unknowningly) are wiper *****, cuz the only other ***** I can think of that were available separately were the radio *****, which are shorter.

Cannot be a headlamp ****, as it was only furnished with the shaft. Cannot be the lighter ****, as it was only furnished with the element (only the element could be bought separately).

The only way you can get the correct ***** is to buy the cables, if NOS parts can be found.

I suggest you invest in a 1960/64 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog (available on a CD from hipoparts.com), so the next time...

You can look the parts up yourself, so...you won't be taken in by repro parts sellers BS claims.

Hi. I guess you didn't read the post completely.
I have shop manuals, Ford shop manuals, original manuals, DVD's and about ten catalogs from vendors.
Spent 20 years in auto parts, worked for Ford in the 70's, after that, retail auto parts.

The parts I ordered were LISTED as the correct parts.
MAC (I guess I should have been more specific, trying to be nice to vendors) says these are the correct parts.
As does Dearborn. However, Dearborn subtlety acknowledges that the parts don't fit in their catalog. Yes, they sell the part, then say, oh, by the way, it's wrong'.
The Mac people send a piece of paper that says, in effect, 'fooled you'.

As to them not being able to make the right part.

I have the aftermarket right parts on the shelf. Except they look different, as they are 'designer' parts. They are red and white, very showy, from the 70's when that was a 'cool thing' to put odd looking ***** on.
They have holes and set screws, they slide over the ends, and set screw on.
Ford also made those. I have two. In black, where I need white with chrome end.
I was using a black one on the heat and on the choke, but wanted to switch to the 'correct' white with chrome.

So the slip on / lockscrew replacement parts were easily made by aftermarket builders.

Ford actually made the correct parts, at one time as I have two, again wrong color.

This is not rocket science.

I 'faked' four ***** by carefully drilling out the holes and using epoxy, because drilling the brass sleeve for a proper set screw was way too careful for my old eyes and arthritic fingers. A younger guy could easily do it this way.

I suspect some of the other replacement switches, like the turn signal, may work fine as direct replacement, but don't want to waste more time/money buying all the ***** and testing each one.
That's sort of the vendors job, really.

Since you have the FORD parts catalog, look up the *****, could be basic number 17513 or 18519.

When you cannot find a listing...look up the cables: 9700 choke, 18518 or 18552 for the heater cable, 01890/91 for the vent cables.

No ***** listed there? Go to body illustration 030, look at the dash pics.

I could tell you, but since you have the parts catalog...

Over the past 10 years, I've spent over 10 grand at Dearborn for my two 1963 Galaxies 500XL's and 1968 Galaxie XL.

Never had a problem, because I knew what I was ordering, what would fit, what would not, because I have the FORD parts catalogs.

You really don't have to be snarky, honestly. I think you miss completely what I am talking about.

Since you question it, I have many Ford catalogs, hard copy, plus a lot of software blowups from what we used to call microfiche. I'm old. I collect. I always have.

Some I scanned back in the day, others are easily obtainable on line.
I also have reproductions of Falcon shop manuals, parts manuals.




Which has NOTHING to do with what I am talking about.
The part numbers do not signify what is sold.

What is sold comes from a handful of vendors (I show 12 total Falcon parts vendors, but I have picked up a few things from 'mustang only' sources)
The parts they are selling, specifically from Dearborn and Mac, in THIS case, are NOT the parts the car calls for.

Dearborn is honest in that it says they won't work without ludicrous machining, right on their site, and in their catalog.

Mac does not. Mac says they fit, then include a piece of paper that says they don't.
That's not very helpful for end users.
Or why I keep finding sacks of these at car swap meets. I doubt very many people install them, then they are not worth shipping back.

Replacing the whole assembly would be stupid in the extreme, when all they need is a simple, cheap to make, part.

This is business, not part numbers.

The vendors could sell that part. Ford made them, aftermarket makes them. I have lots of them, not the right color.

They (the common vendors we all use) choose not sell them.
Perhaps because they hope to sell the 1000% more profitable assembly, or perhaps because they are run by bean counters, not car people.
I leave that to others to speculate.

You do great service supplying part numbers from your years of experience.
That's not really germane here as having the right part number does not help make the vendors machine a correct replacement.

A 'correct' solution is not always the best solution. I would rather have simple ***** that slip on, and clamp down, for a reasonable price, than a 'correct complete assembly' for 10-50 times as much.

As I posted, it is possible that the other parts they sell will work as substitute. I suspect the turn **** would work.
Rather than send more money 'just to see' I modified them myself.
