1962 F350 Project

I've already introduced myself and the F350 Project truck but thought I would start a Project progress discussion so I can keep you posted and to get some anticipated help. I'll start by making sure I can post some pics and then fil you in on the action so far.

My brother and I are working together on this project and he came home with some later modle 1-Ton (8 Lug) parts including a rear with 3.73 gears and the front suspention and disc brakes. The plan is to marry these parts to the '62 and replace the 6 lug split rims, 5.87:1 rear and four wheel drum brakes. That will make a huge improvement in driveability.



We are already prepping the new front crossmember and the rest of the new front end. These parts are from an early 80's 1-Ton.

looks like she has held up pretty good over the years. when i was younger my dad had a 62 f350 that i liked, but he didn't have the title so it ended up becoming a trailer (to my frustration)

Are you planning on installing the TTB? me and my dad always talked about how either an early 90's superduty axle or an axle from under a delivery van would work really good under the front since it wouldn't require all the cutting and would give a factory look (for my grandpa's old 59 f350) I have also wondered about the possibilty of just new spindles, but haven't had the chance to look into too much yet.

are your hydraulics run off a pto setup? i'm one of those guys that loves to hear history and plans! best of luck on it!

Let the education begin! I am new to the Ford world so bear with me. You mention TTB which I have tried to search for and find out what it is...so I think you are talking about Twin Traction Beam Front suspension? If so, are those on 4x4's only? The donor truck is not a 4WD and not our desire for the F350 project.

With my limited knowledge of these trucks I want to say that it would be a swap from the original straight axel to an IFS system. Am I on the right track?

The Hydraulics are run off of a PTO here is a picture of the pump.

We wanted to find a better hood, door glass, new doors, windshield and other trinkets so why not start with a parts truck!?


I think the near perfect hood is worth the price we paid for the truck. We are feverishly canibalizing this rig to make room in the garage again for the real project.

Nice rig there. Looks like your upper grille has the mounting points for the factory safety flashers and blinkers. Do you know the back history on this truck? Hey I hope you dont mind my asking where are you at in Washington. I looked at your profile and it doesnt say. Do you have any pix of the inside of the parts cab?

The history that I know is that the person I bought it from (a co-worker) said that his dad had bought it when near new for a work truck around the Farm. It only has like 56 or 65K miles on it. It has been around the Pacific Northwest/Sumner Wa area all of it's life. The guy I bought it from has only used it on a couple occasions every other year or so over the last several years.

I was wondering what the holes were drilled in the upper grill for. I was not aware of a factory safety flasher option. I will have to do some more searching for those now! Any help finding a refernce for them would be greatly appreciated.

Yep! TTB is infact twintraction beam. first introduced in 1965 in the two wheel drives, and didn't find its way to the four wheel drives until 1980. but rather than the huge stamped steel piece, it used cast iron beams. the exception being the late 80's to early 90's superduty(2wd). not sure about the first couple years of f350's though.

that pto driven setup is the usual setup. my papa's 59 had to have it removed when they pulled the 390 and four speed. the only engine and tranny that he had was an olds 324/powerglide (which is still there complete with a hole in a piston) so he installed an electric/hydraulic unit for a snow plow for the dump box. it was slow but it worked! we have a good running (as in recently rebuilt) 292 Y-block that i have been trying to convince my dad we need to install. we even have a 1932 diamond T that 324 would be pretty sweet in...

other than missing the back half your parts truck doesn't look like its in too bad of shape!

I agree. Here in the rust belt where I live, that parts truck would likely be worth fixing up too.
That's a pretty nice project you've got going.

It's nice to see someone fixing up a wok truck, seems like there's only a few of us doing it. Do you plan on keeping the 6 cylinder?

By the way, the two wheel drive suspension was called Twin-I-Beam and it was introduced in 1965 on the F100s and F250s, and F350s got it in 1967. TTB was the 4x4 version.

The original hood does not look too bad in the pictures. You guys are going to fix her up real nice. Let me know if you need to test her out hauling any dirt. I still need a few yards.
