What do you use to wipe a surface down before painting?
Ken,
I talked to the guys at our local NAPA paint store a while back, when I still thought I would be ready to paint soon, and they suggested a automotive Wax and Grease remover. Wipe it on and while its still wet wipe it off. It dries much slower allowing time to wipe away any residue.

I used both before and Acetone seems to dry with no film. I really like the 2nd wipe before it dries method.
take one rag and wipe with acetone, then a second clean dry rag and wipe off the acetone before it air dries.
I also like to keep wiping until I get no streak marks on the surface, usually two to three times.
Some laquer thinners seem to leave an oily residue behind.

i like the idea of acid on bare metal to remove any rust pitted in metal you can reach with a sander but, wouldnt watering it down afterwards kind of defeat the purpose? i know that if any water gets on any bare metal it will rust in a matter of minutes, just a question

Acid ALWAYS leaves minute salt crystals behind to act as the Energizer Bunny and will eventually ruin your paint. Water alone will not remove Muriatic (diluted Hydrochloric) salts. Finsh with a water & baking soda solution to neutralize the salts.
Muriatic is also VERY rough on your skin.
A MILD phosphoric acid is usually used to etch bare metal so the primer can adhere. Then rinse or follow the instructions on the product.
Get a primer on before the metal flash rusts.

The easiest way I have found to use wax and grease remover is by using a Sure shot sprayer to spray it on then just wipe it off.

At the shop i work for we use wax and grease remover, or ALVIN (alchol and viniger). after that we also wipe over it with a tac rag (sticky paper towel thing that removes any that could be left over....we do all this after the vehicle is in the paint booth..
