Why so many KR and Lariat's?

Why so many KR and Lariat's?
I am planning on buying a 05-07 F-250 CC 4x4 6.0 in about 6 months when I get back from my 3rd deployment here in the wonderful country of Afghanistan. I have owned 2 Diesels before a 01 Dodge 2500 4x4 which was a POS and a 03 F-350 4x4 7.3. Unfortunately I had to get rid of the F-350 because my now ex-wife needed a new car and I could not swing another payment.
I have owned only gas burners of all different brands since to include Fords. IMO Ford is the best out there. But I want a Diesel again, a gas burner just doesn't do it for me.
So back to why I am here, I have been doing allot of research on prices and such online. Looking on Autotrader.com, cars.com, and Craigslist ect... It seems that about 70% of the Superduty's out there are either a Lariat or a KR. I would say another 20% are XL then the rest are XLT. (These % or guesstimits by the way) I don't know if it is just the areas I am looking or what. I have been looking in TN and AL.
I would like to find an XLT because they are cheaper and have power windows, locks and cruise control standard on them. I wouldn't turn down a Lariat or King Ranch if the price was right. But I don't need leather and all the bells and whistles. Plus that is just more that can go wrong on a older vehicle.
Is the Lariat just more popular then the XLT or are the people with XLTs just holding on to them longer? Just curious here.

I'm not sure why the Lariat and KR are more popular, but I can say I was in the same boat as you last year. I had an XLT and loved it...it had what I needed. As I was looking, most of the used ones I saw, especially in the diesels, were Lariats. I ended up getting one, and like you, I could have done just fine with an XLT. But boy, I sure do love this Lariat. I'm not overly pleased with the leather (I sat in a 2011, and THAT'S some nice leather), but it is a comfortable truck. I'm sure not complaining!

The '08 also has a different engine, might want to read up about it and make your decision based on which engine you'd prefer as well. You can probably find one in a similar price range as an '07 if you look hard enough. Are you checking local dealerships (all makes) for their used truck inventories? I bought my used '06 at a Dodge dealership, it was the salesman's FIL's truck. Fairly easy to search those online too.

I have considered an 08, I know that they switched to the 6.4 that year. My biggest concern with that, is one price and two fuel mileage. I know from researching the forums here that the 6.4 is not know for its fuel economy. This is going to be a daily driver for me. About 50 miles round trip a day. I will be using it to tow occasionally. I know that you can do a DPF delete, add exhaust and tune to help increase mileage. And I do plan on doing a few upgrades to whatever truck I do get. But I will keep on the look out for that killer deal. Really I am looking at the cost to benefit ratio here as to what would be best for me. Thanks for the advice on looking at dealer inventories. I haven't really looked there.

Yeah, the fuel mileage on the 6.4 was one reason I just went new when I had to replace my '06. Took me over a month to find it and I just didn't want to spend that much time searching again. But if you're patient and take your time, you can find that jewel out there. Just make sure you add some kind of anti-theft device so it doesn't wind up in Mexico stuffed full of illegals like mine did!
