1989 F150 4.9 Firing Order Question
Riddle me this, we have a 1989 f150 4.9 project truck for the nephew, the truck needs a lot of TLC. Been sitting for a long time, needed new fuel pump etc. New pump installed, pump now running, still wont start, back firing a lot. So we started checking the firing order to make sure no one had changed it, I do know the firing order is 153624. My hayes manual says the #1 plug should be at the 4oclock position just below the hold down screw closest to the fender however looking online, I found one site that said the #1 should be at the 3oclock position above the holddown screw closest to the fender, does anyone know which one it should be? and also did this change in the new models up to 93? I found a site that talked about a 92 which the holddown screws were in a completly different position at the 1 and 7 oclock position, so now I'm really confused.
thanks

Don't be too concerned about where the manual says #1 wire should go, the important thing is that the distributor timing is correct regardless of where #1 falls. Get the engine to TDC on the #1 cylinder, check the manual timing marks on the balancer to be sure it's on TDC. Look at where the rotor is pointing in the distributor, this is where the #1 wire will go. Attach the rest of the plug wires in the correct firing order and the engine should start.

Heres a pic of my 1990 F150 distributor labeled. I did the best I could with my phone camera in the dark lol.

Good luck and dont forget to check the plug wire connectors are snug on both ends.
