Not a cobra jet, it is a thunderjet. It is still a respectible engine though. I have a 69. From what I have read it is best to use the heads on a 429 block, then you have the best of both worlds. Most have a c6 automatic.

T-birds were thunderjets. They are still very impressive but not the same internals as a cobra jet. Cobras bring much more cash. Thunders were non emission engines and from what I have read, using the heads on the 460 is the way to go. I myself would just run it the way it is. I doubt you would be disappointed. Others could tell you where to find a standard bell housing. As far as I know, the majority were automatics.

It's definitely a 429 Thunderjet engine if it is out of a 1968 T-Bird. This was the first of
the 385 family of engines. They were available with either a 2V or 4V carb. It is basically
a large car engine. In 1970, the 429 Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet engines were made.
They both had better heads than the Thunder Jet with larger valves and ports and on
both Cobra Jet 429s had an adjutable valve train that could adjusted for solid lifter cams.
All regular Cobra Jet 429s built after 11-1-69 went back to non-adjustable valve train.
Super Cobra Jets still had a fully adjustable valve train and as always had 4 bolt main
bearings on no.s 2,3, and 4 journals. Cobra Jet 429s are very hard to find today.

I have a 72 thunderjet in my 80 pulling truck. It is all stock other than a RV cam, 750 holly and L&L headers. It out runs alot of the Full tube chassis trucks with cut tires and My truck is in the street leagl class. Just a stock 429 in your flareside would be a tire smoking animal

Coupla days ago in the 1961/66 forum, a member was asking about a 429 Thunderjet someone had installed in a 'ratty' 1963 Uni that was for sale on craigslist.

Coupla peeps were going ga ga, one said the engine should be worth at least a grand.

Uh huh, I said when I chimed in, it's not a HiPo, it's just a 429 w/a 4V. Same engine was installed in 1968/72 Bird's as std equipment (460 was an option in '72). Optional in 1968/73 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars. *

These engines are not rare (at least here in LA LA Land) can be bought in local pick-a-part yards for less than 200 bucks.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thunder-Jet 429 4V: VIN engine code N (5th digit), 10.5:1 compression, 360 gross HP @ 4,600 RPM /// Thunder-Jet 429 2V: VIN engine code K, 10.5:1 compression, 320 gross HP @ 4,600 RPM.

During the HP "race" of the mid/late 50's/60's, all the automakers over stated their HP figures.

The 429 was not the first 385 engine, because 1968 Lincoln's and Continental Mark III's came with 460's as std equipment.

* FoMoCo has had all sorts of so-called "Thunderbird" engines since the 1950's, but every one of them was also available in Ford Passenger Cars (1959/60 Edsels and some Merc's).

1961/64 390 valve covers installed in Fords & Birds were embossed: THUNDERBIRD.

Just bought a truck with a ...............

I just bought an old 77 truck with D0OE-R heads and a DOVE-A block! the guy sort of knew what he had,but did not care. said he rebuilt it 25 years ago, and "thinksit has 4 bolt mains) but is not sure. he put it in an old truck i bought. I am fan of the 429/460, had a 70 rancero with an SCJ engine, but was an N code vin. (that was in the mid 80's! I let the engine slip thru my fingers then, not this one (yes, it was the real deal, same as this one)

Plans are for it to go in my 79 black free wheeling bronco........! yepeee!

N = 1968/72 429 4V. Installed in 1968/72 Ford/Merc and Thunderbird. Not the VIN engine code for a CJ, or SC/J.
You're going ga-ga over nothing. A D0VE-A block is not a CJ or SC/J. It's a plain 'ol 2 bolt main (depending on the stroke) 429 or 460.

D0VE: 1970 only casting number. 429/460's share the same block, the bore is the same, the stroke is different.

So, a D0VE block could be a 460 from a 1970 Lincoln/Continental Mark III or a 429 from a 1970 Ford/Merc Passenger Car or Thunderbird.

The guy knew exactly what he had, sadly...you didn't.

The FIRST rule of thumb in the old car hobby: NEVER believe a single word a seller claims! Private sellers LIE just like used/new car dealers, lawyers, politicians and TV evangelists.

Hi, number1dummy, I may not have quite explained the things right. The vin N was from the ranchers I had 25a years ago. I pulled the engine, pulled it apart, yes, 4 bolt mains, solid lifter came, adjustable valve train.

Fast forward to this last week........I bought a truck that a guy had. It has a set of D0OE-R heads, 9425-c intake, DO VE-A block. Now, I have not pulled the pan( its runs well so........) was just chiming in......+.

I knew exactly what you were referring to with the N VIN engine code. 1970 Ranchero. The engine was swapped because the N VIN code: 1968/72 429 2V. Not a CJ nor SC/J.

1968/72 VIN engine codes: C = 429 4V Cobra Jet (1970/71) / J = 429 4V Cobra Jet (1970/71) / K = 429 2V (1969/71) / N = 429 4V (1968/72) / P = 429 4V (1971/72 Police Cruiser).

Source: 1965/72 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalog.

D0VE block is nothing special, it's either a 2 bolt 429 or a 460.

Hi number dummy. So, shoot me a pm, I will be happy to re explain D0VE-A no ks for you. My engine is now out. It IS a 4bolttwin main block, thick webbing as all dove blood les were. It has CJ cast in the lifter valley. It has a hardness mark on the crank shaft. Would be happy to send you pictures. Got into this with a guy from a different site and had to correct him also. Thanks scott.
