mpg difference 06 F150 2 wheel drive vs 06 F250 4 wheel drive

My buddy and I went wheeling this weekend and I was amazed at what he said his gas mileage was with both of us pulling our Jeeps and trailers.

2 hr drive I averaged around 9-10mpg, while he was getting around 16mpg.

My 06 is a F250, super crew, FX4
His is a 06 F150, ext cab, 2 wheel drive

I understand the weight difference between the trucks and everything, but does having a 2 wheel drive truck make that much difference over a 4x4? My dad has a 01 F150 4x4 and he doesnt get nearly that kind of mpg driving around town without a trailer hooked up.

With gas prices getting as bad as they are and my need for having an F250 decreasing, I was thinking about downgrading to a F150 4x4, but was wondering if it was worth it. Would the weight difference in it being a 4x4 kill the mileage. Im just jealous of his great MPG. LOL

Thanks

my bet is he was not calulating correctly. I would bet he was getting closer to 10-12 myself....not 16.

If he a the 5.4...it can be a bit of a pig. Good motor though.

I disagree on that. It about how heavy his foot. My old f250 2wd 5.4L when I tow scrap F250 it 7000 lb we got 14 mpg but we cruise slow.

In my 06 F250 I had the 5.4. Best I could get was about 12, empty and light footed. I only traded it though because I needed to tow more than it could handle.

I used to drive a 2004 F150 CC 2WD at work and the best it would get was around 13-14 mpg not towing. I doubt he truly got 16 mpg towing. As stated the 5.4 is a thirsty one.

I used to tow my 30ft TT 6000lbs average with my Expedition 5.4 and consistantly got 8-9 mpg at 65mph. I'll let you know next week how I did with the F350 6.0. Your buddies mileage seems too high, and prolly a wishfull guess at best.

I had a 1998 F150 4x4 and never got more than 18 empty so I doubt he got 16 towing that amount of weight. I never checked mine towing, gas was a lot cheaper then and I did not want to know......
