well i just got the 66 (352 4speed) about 1-2 months ago and found a 63 with a 429 thunderjet out of a thunder bird for sale, in the post it said it has 3k in the motor and around 1,110 miles on it and was thinking of getting it as a replacement. what do you all think?
i like my truck but think this would be a better fit but dont know if it is worth it. the seller wants 1k for it and i paid 800 for my rig.
all info would be helpful. thank you

 

The first things I think of when I see what you are looking at are, that engine should be worth $1000.00, and if the rest of the truck is worth nothing is it worth having. Granted I have not seen the truck, so you may have found someone who just doesn't know how to price things.

Second, you are trading a twin i beam truck for a solid front end. There are gains here in the durability, but losses in the ride.

I would proceed cautiously, and look carefully at the older truck because the steps are known to rust much worse than the 65-66 floorboards.

Wow thats quite a choice.

I agree with the guy about the ride of the I-Beam vs the straight axle, but the straight axle has a disk brake option too. Plus you can get a lowered beam, springs, and add in a toyota steering box if you wanna ride low.

Other then that take a look at the new truck, and see if its what you want as far as a project. It could need more work then your willing to do right now too.

 

I would stick with the 1966 for the twin I-Beams...the ride difference would be night and day. I'd also stick with the 352...isn't that the original engine type?
Although the fuel usage between the two is huge...I'm guessing the 352 would hurt the wallet a little less....I'd put the money elsewhere...front discs, power
steering, exhaust, paint etc.

Y'all are going ga-ga over nothing, because...

There is nothing special about a 429 "Thunderjet." It's not a HiPo, it's just a 429 with a 4V carburetor. The 2V version had no 'special' name.

The same engine was installed in 1968/71 Thunderbird's as std. equipment. Optional in: 1968/73 Galaxie/LTD/Mercury Marquis, 1972/73 Torino's & Mercury Montego's.

This engine is not that hard to find...considering how many cars used it.

IMO, it's not worth anywhere close to a grand. Here in LA LA Land, you can buy one in a pick-a-part yard for less than 200 bucks. You can buy a 460 4V for the same price.

Any 429 or 460 can be bolted into a 1965/66 F100/250 2WD using the 460 engine mounting parts from 1973/79 F100/350's.

But, this is not the case with a 1961/64, everything has to be fabricated (or a mounting kit bought from an aftermarket supplier-if there's one available).

What quality of workmanship was used to install this "Thunderjet" engine in the 1963, was it done correctly, or is it a "hash job?"

Hey Bud, This is my Uni. I paid $3500 for it and it looked mostly as you see it. Most of the work we did on it can't be seen in the pic's except the engine and engine bay. I would run from the one on craig list for that price. If he gets $500 for it than he would be very lucky.

I don't think the Uni on CL is horrible or anything....I just wouldn't swap for what you have.

 

This is why I like this site. You can post something and get people honest opinions. Maybe I'll save my money and pick up a donor truck for my 66 I have now.

Well Rgd. I have a 66 f350 custom cab that I am parting out or selling the whole truck. It runs and drives. and is in the for sale section here. It would not take much to barge it to Seattle as we do that all the time. than as close as you are drive it home. It's a very restore-able truck so it is also the best for a good parts truck. All it needs to drive it is brake lines. I went through the brakes and they worked very well. Than after it sat for a few years I fired it up and busted some lines. I could fix the brakes and drive it to the barge head for ya. PM me if interested.
