2001 Escape Cat Removal

I am wanting to know if it is possible to remove my one of my cats from my 2001 ford escape? I havnt had any issues with it, but i did notice there were 2 of them when i was under. Has anyone removed on of the cats from thier escape with no problems with the computer and pressures? has anyone tried it and it been a total dissaster?

I did take two cat.;s off of my 03 v6. On mine it has 3 cat. One built into each header, and one after the y pipe. The guts out of the one in the front header came loose and stopped up the cat after y pipe. A new header was $575, and a new rear cat was a few hundred, so my exhaust mechanic urged me to try beating the rest of the guts out of the front header cat and removing the cat after the y pipe and try it to see if anything changed. He stated that with some cars when this is done the mpg drops drastically, some times nothing changes. He removed both and I have drove 15K with no change in mileage or any other change. My check engine light stays on all the time now, but I can live with that for the $700-$900 I saved.
