a friend of mine has a 90 f150 4x4 with a 302 5speed in it.it wont shift gears correctly unless you pull up on the shifter then it does fine.any ideas what it is?

i had a 5speed that dropped a shifter rail and wouldnt shift right

 

the thing is that u shouldnt be able to pull up on it.if its loose u got somethings wrong.under the boot there are 4 alan bolts that hold it in place i think. see if there tight.just a thout

 

If you get the thing fixed, consider going to a Hurst shifter. It has 30 % less throw. Be a careful shopper on the Hurst web site. Different shifter arms are available for the shifter assembly itself.

A very common problem are the plastic bushings
the shifter pivot ball sits in crack. There are two bushings
If the bushings crack, they cause excessive wear on the pivot
pins which are pressed into the side of the shifter top cover.

Here's a picture of the repair kit. You can purchase one on
Ebay. Search for M5R2 shifter.

No need to pull the transmission. Everything can be installed
after you remove the shifter which is held to the transmission
top cover by 3 torx bolts.



The kit includes the 2 bushing halfs, 2 pivot pins and
sometimes the 3 torx bolts that hold the shifter to
the top cover along with the cover plate.

Here's a link with a diagram that shows the parts.
There is also in the same link a YouTube video that shows how to replace
the bushings. The vehicle in the video doesn't appear to be a F150 but the repair
process is the same as for your vehicle.

x2... I've done this twice on a couple friends 1/2tons and it's an easy 1-2hr fix. If you haven't changed your tranny fluid in a while I'd suggest doing that at the same time. Remember preventative maintence allows less of this later on...

 

I just put one of those kits in this weekend, and it made an amazing difference. In fact, the old plastic bushings were nowhere to be found when took the cover off. I guess they broke, fell inside and got ground up.

Ebay is the best deal going for that kit.
