84 bronco back fired then quit

Hello folks had my bronco II stuck to the nuts the other night had it floored trying to get out it back fired and would not start after. Towed it home cheaked spark got good spark , cheaked im getting fuel, I cheaked one plug hole got 120 psi compression. For the sake of it i put new plugs in it today tryed starting it would just back fire every now and then. Any idea's ?

Does your engine use a timing chain or gears? A good backfire will cause the timing chain to jump a tooth or more if it's loose. Check your timing--if it's way off, check further.

2.8 uses timing gears made of a odd fiber material in stock form, and can disintegrate with age and redline rpms. I would start looking at more mundane things first like ingestion of water or a TFI module that died.

Okay so alittle update I pulled distrubtor out and found the gear to be destroyed anybody no typical how much damage does this cause ?

Most of what you see missing is in the oil system...that is not good.
IMO pull the oil pan !

Tear down time, the camshaft will be trashed too, lots of filings in the oil.
Decision time: trash it or fix it.

Well that sucks i got a spare motor but i might try out a 4.0 swap
