1978 bronco 300-6

I'm getting ready to put a 300-6 in my 78 Bronco, I know that the Bronco is the same as a F-150 as far as frame, firerwall, and evey thing else in the engine bay. I found a set of Headman headers, Hedman Hedders 89300 - Hedman Street Hedders - Overview - SummitRacing.com but they will only fit 2wd but look like they would work, I also found a set of hookers headers, Hooker Headers 6823HKR - Hooker Super Competition Headers - Overview - SummitRacing.com thease fit a 4wd but cost way more money than I have, yet look similar. My question is if any one has tryed to use the headman's on a 4wd, and do you think they will work? I can modify them if I have to but don't want to fully build new headers out of them.

A 300 in a 78 Bronco? You definitely have to take pictures.
Those are a rare beast indeed (since they're all custom).

What's your purpose for putting one in?

The first set (the Hedmans) look like they only state they're for 2WD.
The Hooker set says it's for both.

Where are you located? I have a set of headers for sale that I removed from the 300 in my '84 Bronco. They fit perfectly and are also the split design that makes them much easier to install.

I'm putting the 300-6 in my 78 Bronco because my current motor(390) gets 6 miles to gallon on a good day, and I like to trail ride and 300-6 has amazing low end torque. I live in michigan 30 min south of Grand Rapids.

What kind of headers do you have, pics, what kind of shape are they in, and how much?

Man, the 300 is incredible for off-roading. I've climbed up 2 miles of a steep, rocky old mining road without ever putting my foot on the gas pedal. The torque at idle was enough. It's drool worthy.

I can't find any part numbers, but from what I remember, they're 4WD Hooker headers. I don't know if they make them any more, but I can't find them for sale new anywhere.

They're in really decent shape. Just some light surface rust that almost rubs off by hand, and a dent in one of the runners.

Not sure on the price, I think they were around $400 new, but I don't know how well headers hold their value.

Shipping would be another issue.

I was trail riding in my uncles 78 ford with a 300-6 we idle every where, there were times that I would have had to jump on my big block.
I don't know how headers hold there value either, and shiping would probably be crazy. I think that i'll pass, but thankes. I'll post pics shortly of the swap if interested.

No prob. Just thought I'd put the offer out there.

Definitely interested in pictures of a 300 in a 78/79 Bronco. I know I've thought about doing it a lot of times.

Two thumbs up for the I - 6. A healthy one makes for a great over-all engine. And you can't beat the fuel mileage compared to any of te V8's.

Why don't you go with a set of efi manifolds. You can run dual exhaust, they stay sealed better, and if your starter needs to be changed, you won't have the pull the header and intake to do it. You can find them at your local j/y for about $40. Use Studs to hang them. They flow almost as well as headers.

AB--those headers look like 1 5/8" runners. If they are then they must be a set of clifford's. He is the only one I am aware of that makes that size.

Does Clifford have more than one set? It looks like theirs point downwards, whereas these point straight back. Look like they have a lot of the same bends though.

I got the headman headers they look like they are going to work. I thought about the efi manifolds but like the sound of headers.

Here is a pic of the 390.

You need a clearer pic of the 300. You went with the 268 cam. I imagine you also went with a C intake or a Clifford? Interesting. If the purpose of your swap was for economy, you're probably going to be seeing about the same mpg as you did with the 390.

I know. I did the same swap, but I kept in mind that I wanted to get 50% better mpg, and that guided my choices.

"The sound" of headers is determined by the mufflers through which they flow, unless you are running open headers. Nobody runs open headers except at the track. IMO you should of left the 390 in it and saved the $ because of the choices you have made.

Here is a pic of the header, fits like a glove, this is the closest spot about an 1/4" from the frame.

I got the 300-6 in about two weeks a go, been driving it all over the place. Took about a week to get the carb right, but now it's dialed and I love it. The best part is when someone ask what motor is in it. No one thinks it's a six cylinder.

Pictures! Videos!

That's is so awesome. How would you compare how the 300 moves that Bronco around vs. the V8?

Broncos and 300s were meant to be together in my opinion.

Pictures and video's won't be till after this weeked. The 300-6 has a differnt power than a V8, I won't really know how the 300-6 going to do till this weekend, I'm going to silver lake.
