timing f150 1992

I recently inherted a 92 f150.I failed smog timing out (15 instead of 10). I figured my friend had changed timing for some reason or another. Did adjusment (didn't know what I was doing) and then fail another pretest for emmisions. If anyone has a hard time finding the in-line spout connector try looking on the fire wall on drivers side. The thing is close to the ignition moduel which is not always mounted on the distrib. Ended up there were several other problems that I of course assumed were maintained by prior owner. Plugs way over gapped, one broken & arching, bad plug wires, cap rotor and the last (which I hope is the last) the alt wasn't all there. Aftere hours of work (by a not so dumb female blonde, speaking of myself) I had the thing running great. It died suddenly once. I don't know where to judge timing. With the in-line spout connector out at warm, should you judge the timing by the half moon or the straight arm. I've heard both. I just need to pass smog.
PS if you need to find that in-line spout connector I think I can help. No one I talked to could help me but I recieved good advise from this site!!

jerry595 and lamp210, you both need to go out and buy a manual for your trucks. go to an auto parts store and rent or buy a timing light. tell us more about engine, trans and then we can help you more. good luck, and welcome.

the timing marks are on left side of the harmonic balancer, there are markings on the right side also but serve no purpose(for timing that is) you will see a little v groove when you actual have the timing light working, that mark is 10 degrees BTDC. It would be wise to mark the timing mark on the harmonic balancer with chalk, make it alot easier to see with the light

Timing mark is machined into the crankshaft b pulley about 1/16" wide and runs from front to rear of pulley surface; it is not otherwise marked. the timing scale is located on the passenger side and is visible by looking down past the alternator to the lower part of the front cover; the scale is marked with 0 in middle and goes up and down about 10 to 20 degrees both ways one direction is marked advance Before TDC and the other is marked. Sorry had to get Haynes manual which says V8 scale is engraved into the pulley and mark is stationary; I6 is a notch on pulley and scale is on the cover. I6 scale is marked 0 for TDC, goes 14 degrees BTDC and only 6 STDC; V8 scale goes to 30 degrees BTDC and only 10 degtrees ATDC.
Timing should be 10 degrees BTDC.
I usually get under and mark the scale where I want the timing set with a yellow crayon after cleaning the area to be sure I have the right mark then locate the timing mark/scale on the pulley and mark 10 Degrees BTDC on the scale with the crayon so both are visible when running. The I6 mark is a notch in the edge of the pulley so it has to be filled with crayon so it is visible while moving. Be sure to remove SPOUT jumper GREy plug with two wires at ignition module harness should be Pink wire in and out of SPOUT jumper.
Haynes has diagrams in manual but I couldn't find one in ford manuals.
Hope this helps - if necessary post back with your engine type so can be clearer and more specific.

^ I think that is the plug for the power steering pressure switch. If you don't have a 5.0 and a stick shift, you shouldn't have the pressure switch, and the plug will just hang there and not do anything. The SPOUT connector is very close to the TFI ignition module, located on the distributor on earlier EFI trucks, and mounted on the drivers side fender on the later models (at least as early as '92 the TFI is on the fender).

The plug hanging loose is not used; it is not where the SPOUT connector goes. The SPOUT is on the fender near the TFI module. It's a plug similar to what you have near the wiring junction, but it will have a plastic piece in the end of it connecting the circuit. The connector is likely gray in color.

As long as it doesn't ping, it's fine to run it at 14°.

At 14 degees I would run higher octane fuel to avoid pinging.

I would run the lowest octane possible without causing pinging.
