351w or 460?
In a F250 HD, the small block V8 (351) will get marginally better MPG than 460 and be far less powerful.
If you want F150, it will get probably 15-16 mpg, way better than 10 to 11 with 460
I have 460 for towing and it tows better than with 351.
I thought about F250 with 351 but it wouldn't work as well for towing 3-4 tons.

so if i get a f 150 with a 351 i could get 15-16mpg and if i got the same thing in a 250 i would get worse?
tell you want i want i want a truck that runs pretty good and it might do some towing with farm equmpent not much heavy though but i want a 5 speed and i want an 8cly but i dont think the 302 is a good truck engine so i was gonna go with a 351w but if a 460 only get s a little worse then go with a 460 and lots more power

If you want a 5 speed and bigger than a 302, the only realistic option is a F-250. F-150's supposedly had a ZF behind the 351 in 1988, but I think that was the only year, very rare anyway. Most people with 460's get between 7-10mpg in town, and about 14 highway at best, but usually around 12. Now, ive seen em both extremes, some guys get 6mpg in town while one guy I know used to get an incredible 15mpg mixed driving with his 97' 460.
The 460 is rated @ 245HP 400lbs/ft torque
the 351 is rated @ 200-210HP 310-325lb/ft torque depending on year

Oh, those 460's are not race winners. In their earlier days they were king of the hill by a large margin, but in their later years (late 90's) they were dramatically falling behind the competition in HP and torque. while dodge was forging new ground for the basis of all future big blocks and well ahead of either manufacturer, Chevy was kicking it in quite well with thier new Vortec controlled engines. A 460 simply wouldn't put up much of a challenge to a new big block or the 345HP 5.7L hemi.

351w or 460?
i was actually going to post the same thing. But i have something to add. Hypothetically speaking, if i wanted to turn my F-150 with the 300 six and mazda tranny into a speed demon what should i swap in a 351 or a 460. Factors to consider cost, longivity, power and time/effort. Me and my buddies got into a huge debate about it. Just what to pick everyones brains.

Since one of your variables happens to be cost, then the 351w engine is your only option. And not that the 351 is a downgrade from a 460, I have talked to guys with smallblocks that would rival a good many big blocks. I've heard of trucks running built 408w+ strokers that run through the quarter in high 10's. You can use the same trans with the 351 (keep in mind longevity might not be the best if a person was really planning on working the engine over). The 351 will be a basic bolt on with minor changes. EFI and additional HP adding components are very easy to come by, much more so than a EFI 460. If you go 460, you need different trans, motor/frame mounts, radiator, beefed up suspension. This is by far the most expensive way to add the HP but it also can reach the highest potential if you go carb. While both high horsepower N/A engines will get single didget gas mileage, the 351 will do better. Just my opinion though.

Stoover 007, go big!!!!! I have a '96 F-250 with the 351 and a 5-speed 4x4 3.55 rears. I ordered this truck new thinking I couldn't afford to keep gas in the 460, and the $4500 for the diesel at that time was out of the question. I get 11.5 MPG, uphill, downhill, tailwind, headwind, loaded, empty, pulling, city, and highway. Go for the power, I don't think you will be satisfied with the mileage performance from the 351. Plus you will have a lot more power for everything. Just something to think about, I took a trip from Indiana to Oklahoma City with just the truck, it was roughly 1500 miles round trip. I drove straight through, cruise control set on 75 mph, stopped only for gas, all highway driving. The 351 averaged 12.3 mpg. My father-in-law drove his motor home with a 454 in it and go 13.5, and we went together!! So go figure. The first time my truck went back for some minor warranty the mechanic opened the hood, looked at the motor, laughed, and said "Should have got the 460, more power, same mileage." Who better to know than a mechanic that worked on the them. Good luck.
