That would be interesting to see what they do with that you already have your class B CDL endorsement so you already passed your CDL test for air brakes now if the add an A class to your licence would the not have to keep the CDL on it? So in theory youll have a class A CDL

No, that would be a CA driver's license, class D for standard cars. A class A CDL is a commercial driver's license for tractor trailer combinations over 26000lbs gross weight.

But yes. I have done this as well as many I know.
I thought the examiner wasn't indifferent to it.
It is actually more common than you think.
Picture any dual tandem GN trailer pulled by a pickup.

There is even a question answered about just this in the FMCSA interpretation portion of the site.

I get a kick out of all the people that throw "facts" around about this subject that don't know jack.

If a driver either fails the air brake component of the general knowledge test or performs the skills test in a vehicle not equipped with air brakes, the driver is issued an air brake restriction, restricting the driver from operating a CMV equipped with air brakes.

I love not being wrong.
It is entirely possible to get a Class A driver's license (CDL or private) without taking the air brake tests. Without taking the tests to show you have knowledge about the operation of air brakes, you cannot operate a vehicle that uses them... at least, this is how it is done in Texas. By passing the air brake knowledge test, you get what is known as an air brake endorsement on your license. It is not very common to take the exams for a Class A license without using a vehicle equipped with air brakes, and thus Class A licenses without an endorsement for air brakes is rare.
Would you like to argue haz-mat endorsements, too?
