Can you explain how the 4wd works?

My tires are bald and I know that does not help my situation at all. I'd like to know how the 4wd system works though. I got stuck yesterday in a bit of snow and ice off road. I noticed that only the right side was spinning. Before the right side started spinning the left was though. I always assumed with the hubs locked both the R&L would spin.
I have warn lockers and the hubs were locked btw.

Something is not right?? Are you sure you have WARN Lockers, or do you mean WARN Hubs. They are not the same. If you have lockers, front and/or back, then both tires turn. Period. If you're stock you most likely have limited slip. If so, and you can't make traction you will get "limited slip." I'm assuming you had at least one front tire spinning, hence your 4WD was engaged. Did you manually lock the hubs?

If you are stock, you do not have limited slip on the front axle. Even if you lock both hubs, the side with no traction will spin. Locking the hubs will not lock the differential.

The front differential is an "open" differential, not limited slip or locker-type. You really want it to be that way. Otherwise, things get kinda' "squirrely", especially in turns, and even more-so on ice.

The idea of "locking" comes from the fact that you "lock" the front drive axles to the front drive hubs with the front "hub locks".

What you call "hubs" are actually "hub locks". They are the things you turn to lock.

The "hubs" are what the front tires and brake rotors bolt onto, and which contain the front wheel bearings.

I'm sorry for the misinformation. I believe what I mean to say is that I have warn locking premium hubs that I recently installed because the old ones stopped working. So I guess my 4wd system is working properly then as long as one front tire was spinning?

Again, these are not hubs. They are hub locks.

Yes, it's confusing, but maybe not so much now.
