Need help with car transport!
I am buying a 69 mach 1 from a guy in LA, I live way north in California. So we are basically 700 miles away. I need to transport the car somehow. Does anyone know the cheapest way to do it? The ebrake works but there is no engine. Thanks alot.

Erik,
Two choices: 1) tow it yourself or, 2) professional transport.
The second runs anywhere from $1.25 per mile and up, (most of these guys are going to have a fuel surcharge right now anyways).
Option one means you will need to borrow a truck, (your Ranger won't cut it), and rent an auto transport from U-haul, (or a local). A one way will go for $125 to $150, (picked up in LA). You figure the gas based on the truck but allow for 650 miles down and the same back. A late model 1/2 T should make it down on forty to 45 gallons and about a 20% increase going home, say another 10 gal..
100 gallons of gas at what, $2.10 to $2.25 plus meals, four or five stops at MickeyD's is at least $20.
Hope that this helps you a little. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I know from recent events that a U-Haul trailer is going to be fifty bucks per day. Ryder (www.yellowtruck.com) will not rent a trailer without a truck rental as well.
One way you can go is to rent a truck and a trailer just so that you have a beast of burden to haul with...
It would be one way, and you'd have the benefit of a diesel to drive.
Either way - I would be super careful of speed on the trip - take your time, and be alert to trailer sway. Rented car haulers sometimes have a tendancy to whip, and older cars will make this even more likely because they are heavier. -Last thing you need is to lose your load after spending the money to make it all happen!
So be safe - SLOW IS BETTER in this kind of a deal.
The best way to go is to have a flatbed to haul it on, but I doubt you'll find one for rent.

The best way I have found on transporting cars that are missing engines or are unregistered is U-Haul. Basically gather about 4 adult men, '1' truck (prefferably Ford) and a car transport, *not dolly* push the vehicle with your friends onto the carrier or use another vehicle to safely nudge it on there. And your on your way.
Esitmated cost 60$ for dolly and gas money
well have fun and good luck with your new toy!!

Greywolf: A one way rental means he has to somehow get to where the car is located, leaving his present transportation at home.
How far is U-Haul, Ryder, Hertz-Penske from the: airport, bus station, AMTRAK?
Rent a vehicle and a trailer in Norcal for a 1400 mile RT? OUCH! The gas prices will be a killer. One gallon of 87 octane regular grade gasoline was $4.55 in LA County as of last Saturday.
JMO: Hire someone to do it. Make sure they have (at least liability) insurance.
