egr delete should I do it

I have a 2006 6.0 with low milage around 70 000miles, truck is running good no problems, I live up in manitoba canada, and I have a diesel mechanic that will work for 40$/hr, its hard for me to spend money when there is nothing wrong with my truck but I do want this truck to last, what is the advantage to removing the egr and are there any disadvantages and should I have it done or leave it alone? The mechanic also mentioned he would install a flashtuner? I guess to tell the computer that the egr is still there? Thanks for any advice...Jason

I'm on in the minority that believes that in of itself the EGR system doesn't need to be deleted or bypassed. Now I don't know what your emission laws are like for you yanks up there, but I would make sure that you consider that and also make sure that if you do have emission testing in certain areas that it still isn't illegal for you to remove the EGR system in areas that do not have testing. That's a wrong connection that people down here make and it has cost some people quite a bit of change.

For a 2006, you will need to have a custom tuner write a tune that shuts off the EGR system entirely and tells the computer not to go looking for any input signals. You don't have to have any increase of HP/TQ output unless you want to.

Find out your laws first to see if you should do it, after that think about if you want to do it since you don't have anything mechanically wrong to led you to that decision.

personally, i wouldn't force it. A year after I bought mine my oil cooler went and i did both @ the same time.

Although it runs a little better. It's not this "amazing fix" that solves all the worlds problems. Keep an eye on the EGR valve, wait until you have to go in there for something else.

Keep your oil cooler and cooling system healthy and ther is no reason to delete the egr cooler.

I was serious thinking about deleting my egr, but after reading several forums I'm having my doubts. Question: Can I just use a tuner to bypass the egr? Also if I decide not to delete the egr or by a tuner, should I take the egr and clean it every once in a while. Thanks for the help.

You can shut off the valve from opening and closing with just a tuner, but there are the fluke instances where the person doing the tuning may not have tuned it correctly and sometimes there are still issues.

I will say this, Matt at Spartan anecdotally found out that more people claim to have better MPGs with the EGR kept on then turned off. Now there are a lot of factors that go into MPG calculations, so take it for what it's worth, but that was one reason that towards the end of his SCT tuning days, he left the EGR on unless specifically told otherwise.

IMHO I would check my ect and eot differential. If it is ok, yur oil and egr cooler should be fine. If not, then you can decide to delete or replace the egr cooler while yur replacing the oil cooler. I'd spend the money on a gauge or gauges to measure at a minimum ect, eot, boost, fuel pressure and egts. They will keep an eye on things so the truck will last and let you know what and when you need to fix something.

I did not want to do it but my temps spread to the 15 mark and then all my coolant disappeared. So I went ahead and pulled the plug and did an EGR delete along with a new coolant filter. But I first bought the Insight and the coolant filter in hopes of preventing this mess.

It will last, maintenance is the key with Ford filters & Ford cetane booster.

The egr system leaves build up in the intake. Cleaning that will also do allot of good

Because we have to buy ULSD (ultra low sulpher diesel) fuel, it helps to add "cetane booster" every time we fill up (about 5 onces), We buy it by the gallon at the Ford store. Keeps your motor happy.
