Question JCPenny Rototiller?

I have an older model JCPenny front tine rototiller that needs a seal in the gear box. It's a 5hp, 26" wide, model 3008. Anyone here have any idea as to who made this tiller for JCPenny? If I'd have to guess it was made in the seventies or early eighties.

No idea.....

But I have a Montgomery Ward tiller about that old (late 70s anyway....)....The engine crapped out, and I just forked over $179.00 for a brand new Powerhorse from Northern Tool & Equipment:

Powerhorse 208cc OHV Horizontal Engine | Powerhorse Engines | Northern Tool + Equipment

Works great.

My dad had one of those years ago. Seems like it was made by either MTD or Simplicity for JCP.

MTD is the source for parts I would check out. MTD made alot of the catalog store (Sears, JC Penny, Montgomery Ward) small equipment back in the day.

If you can pull that seal without damaging it too much, your local bearing shop should have a replacement. You might even be able to read the numbers off the seal and make the search even easier.
