Exhuast smell

Greetings,
I have enjoyed reading your forum for several months now but this is the first time that i have posted, i'm very new to the world of diesel engines so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I just started getting a strong exhuast smell in the cab and would like to know if anyone else has had this issue or any ideas of what may be the cause. I have owned Fords before but like I have stated this is my first diesel so i'm not sure if this is something that can be expected. thanks

Welcome to FTE...I suspect you are smelling an ongoing DPF regeneration. This would be normal. You should not be getting fumes in the cab though.

Regards

I agree - this is probably happening during the regen process. One suggestion is to drive at highway speed and make sure it completes so it doesn't keep coming back due to not being able to complete the cycle.

Welcome to FTE

It could be as others are saying or it could be an actual exhaust leak. Read the following thread and see if it's similar.

Don't wait. Schedule an appointment to get the exhaust gasket repaired. You should never smell exhaust, except while backing up.

Welcome to the club. I too recently had an exhaust leak on my 2011 F250. Took it to the dealer who did a "smoke" test and discovered that an exhaust gas pressure tube bracket had come loose. After retightening the bracket, I have not had anymore exhaust smell in the cab. Go get it checked out. I waited thinking that it could be the active regen, but it didn't go away. A couple of hours at the dealer and no more nasty smell.

As said I would have it checked. I had a strong exhaust smell in my 2004, especially when stopped, and was a big factor in me trading it in. I thought maybe it was from me covering vents and drilling holes when the stereo/subs were put in, but now believe it was a leak as other people describe. Passengers who weren't used to it really complained.

Side note, what do people think of the new smell. They show clips of it running inside with "no" exhaust smell - FALSE! Mine at idol gives off a distinct ammonia smell. Not as strong as the old diesels, but I like the old smell MUCH better. The 7.3s and dodge 5.9's in my opinion have the classic odor that I wish mine still had.
